Efforts to help save the endangered Vancouver Island marmot got some help last
week from Exeter Public School, which raised $185 for the Marmot Recovery
Foundation. Debbie Coates' Grade I class has spent the last couple of weeks
studying the marmot, Canada's most endangered animal. Pictured above from left
are students Terry Hartman, Kirsten Brintnell and Noah Chapman. Only 100
Vancouver Island marmots remain in the world, with 70 of them in recovery cen-
tres. There are only 20 females left. Coates' Grade I class call themselves "The
Marmoteers," and sold over 500 tickets to win two plush marmot toys to raise
money for recovery efforts. Grade I student Benny Turner and Grade 3 student
Alyssa Keller were the winners.Vancouver Island marmots, members of the squir-
rel family, eat grass and plants and grow to the size of housecats. The money
raised by Exeter Public will go towards feeding marmots in recovery centres and
research into protecting the marmot. More information can be found at www.mar-
