The residents' operation group and resident council benefit from the proceeds of this event and decide how they wish to spend the funds raised. Queensway also appreciated the many staff, residents and family members who donated items to sell as well as those who volunteered on the day of the sale. Draw winner was Patty Murray of Hensall. Nursing home resident Ida Dickert celebrated her 94th birthday Sun., Zurich diners enjoy games ZURICH — Meeting on May 4, 11, 18, 25, Zurich Wednesday Diners' May was a busy month. Volunteer appreciation was held in Clinton with several attending from Zurich either at the noon or evening meal with entertainment by Town and Country support staff and Jean Young. Volunteers helping in the kitchen this month were Elaine Weido, MaryLou Denomme, Jean Gingerich, Cecelia Farwell, Doris Jantzi, Helen Gingerich, Marie Deichert, Anne Finlay, Marg Hayter, and Dianne Wilds. At the desk welcoming diners were Kay Hay, Jossie Denomme, Farwell, Glena Olcen and Hayter. The 50/50 winners were Farwell, Isabelle Thorvardson, and Jossie Denomme. On May 4, progressive euchre was played with Earl Flaxbard and Olivea Bedard as high winners. Four persons tied for lone hands: Gertie Stade, Jossie Denomme, Marjorie Reichert and Gwen McKellar. Two door prizes were won by Jean Gingerich and Helen MacLean. Two readings were given; McKellar read "My Mother's Garden" and Farwell read "A Mother's Love." May 11 guest Less Hills of Hensall spoke about spring. May 18 the Tri -County Senior Games event was held in the auditorium for bid euchre with most stay- ing for the dinner. Extra persons were needed to help in the kitchen that day. May 25 the May birth- days of MacLean and Elroy Desjardine were cel- ebrated. Entertainment of the day was bingo with the winners being Desjardine, Farwell, Lottie Grenier, Marie Cyr, and Reichert. Flowers for the table were donated by Olcen and Doris Hamilton this month. Taking a bouquet home were Helen Otterbein, Josephine Denomme, MaryLou Denomme, Viola Ramer Freida Wilson, Hay, Marie Gelinas. May 29 with her daughter Merle McLellan and eight additional family members when they joined her for the celebration and provided a deli- cious birthday dinner and cake. Shirley Luther of the Salvation Army led worship Tuesday after- noon with her husband Eric as vol- unteer organist. Volunteer Marg Cole organized the euchre players Wednesday after- noon while several other residents benefitted from walks and wheel- chair rides outdoors. Helping resi- dent enjoy time outdoors in good weather is a priority and the fun and fitness exercise group is held on the deck whenever possible. Audibly Awesome Quartet provid- ed the music for the May birthday party Thursday evening. Cassie Heron, Dawn Quick, Julene Keys, Ron Isles, Aleida Kats, Les Mitchell, Jean O'Brien, Ida Dickert and Otilla Reichert all celebrated birthdays in May. Friday morning the monthly resi- dent council meeting was held with good attendance of residents gath- ered to provide their input regarding programs and also offer their ideas, comments or concerns. Coming events Wed., June 1 at 3:30 p.m.: Family council meeting; Fri., June 3 at 7 p.m.: Friendship Friday with Andy Rau and Friends; Tues., June 7 at 9 a.m.: Volunteer auxiliary meeting. Efforts to help save the endangered Vancouver Island marmot got some help last week from Exeter Public School, which raised $185 for the Marmot Recovery Foundation. Debbie Coates' Grade I class has spent the last couple of weeks studying the marmot, Canada's most endangered animal. Pictured above from left are students Terry Hartman, Kirsten Brintnell and Noah Chapman. Only 100 Vancouver Island marmots remain in the world, with 70 of them in recovery cen- tres.There are only 20 females left. Coates' Grade I class call themselves "The Marmoteers," and sold over 500 tickets to win two plush marmot toys to raise money for recovery efforts. Grade I student Benny Turner and Grade 3 student Alyssa Keller were the winners.Vancouver Island marmots, members of the squir- rel family, eat grass and plants and grow to the size of housecats.The money raised by Exeter Public will go towards feeding marmots in recovery centres and research into protecting the marmot.
