Author writes books, published by `Books for boys'

MOUNT CARMEL — "What does an author look
like?" was the question posed to Mount Carmel stu-
dents May 24 by writer Michael Wade, author of the
"And Then It Happened" series of books, published by
`Books for Boys'.
Despite the students' answers that an author wears
glasses, carries a notebook and pencil, Wade said it
makes no difference what anyone looks like.
According to Wade, 95 per cent of writers have
another full-time job which has nothing to do with
writing, which is also true of Wade, a prison guard
who lives in Strathroy.
It doesn't matter what you do, said Wade, "and you
don't have to be smart."

The author said he had less than average marks in
school and ran away several times, but "was dragged
back."
Despite his escape attempts, Wade said he eventually
started having fun with words and realized "the power
of words."
Although no language uses more words than English,
Wade said there are 31 important words which make
up 25 percent of any book.
Reading the first paragraph of J.K Rowling's book
"Harry Potter", Wade said "everyone can write that
sentence,' and noted Rowling also never received high
marks in school but has made "a billion dollars."
The author shared some of his writing tips with the
students, such as changing one word in a sentence for
humour, and using the dictionary to find humorous
items.
Wade demonstrated his technique by reading the dic-
tionary definition of corn oil, which said it is made
from squeezing corn, before he asked the students
"where does baby oil come from?"
