Home decorating and improvement tips
With the holiday season over, our thoughts are
turning to freshening up our homes and there is
nothing as inexpensive as a coat of paint to make
a significant change to the appearance of a room.
Studies show that Canadians are spending more
time in their homes and are therefore looking to
make their living environment as comfortable as
possible. Rather than making bolder statements,
colours are softer, warmer and more soothing.
There has been a strong trend towards "nature"
colours for both inside and outside our homes.
Wall coverings are another way of changing the
appearance of a room. When walls are imperfect
and have problems there are paintable papers
available at decorating centers, as well as many
books to suit everyone's style and taste.
Now that spring is here, we anticipate enjoying
our decks and outdoor lifestyle. Exterior surfaces
should dry out sufficiently from the winter ele-
ments before we repaint or stain. Proper prepara-
tion is important to the performance of any finish.
There are many finishes and sheens of paint
available — flat, velvet, eggshell and semi -gloss.
Some of the new latex based kitchen and bath
product is a very durable and mildew resistant
paint. Melamine paint has excellent mar -resis-
tance and adhesion to a variety of surfaces and is
available in both latex and oil base, suitable for
kitchen cupboards, vanities and trim. Even
though latex paints are good there are still areas
where an oil-based product is required.
If you require new flooring or furniture it is wise
to check out what is available before choosing
your paint colour, preferably in the lighting condi-
tions where they will be applied.
