Allen drafted by Belleville Bulls
By Pat Bolen

HENSALL — A Hensall
hockey player will be
hoping to suit up with the
Belleville Bulls next sea-
son after being drafted
May 7.
Kenny Allen, 15, who
describes himself as a
stay at home defence -
man, went in the ninth
round of the OHL Priority
draft.
While other teams had
been looking at him,
Allen said he is looking
forward to his chance to
make the Belleville line-
up.
With the team in a
rebuilding phase, Allen
said he will get more ice
time than he would have
with London.
He said he has also
been told by scouts
Belleville is a great orga-
nization.
A member of the Junior
B Strathroy Rockets last
season, scouting reports
on Allen noted his skat-
ing, aggressive and stay
at home tendencies, as
well as his size potential.
At six foot and 180
pounds, Allen said the
team likes the way both
look at this point.
It was a good year
overall with the Rockets,
according to Allen, who
said he learned a lot and
it was a good organiza-
tion to skate with.
Although the team did
better than expected dur-
ing the season, Allen said
they had the misfortune
to run into Chatham in
the playoffs.
Allen will attend a fit-
ness and orientation
weekend with the Bulls
July 29-30 in Belleville
and plans on working on
his skating and condi-
tioning over the summer
with a personal trainer
and a team conditioning
program.
He has also been invit-
ed the Team Ontario
Camp in August in
Ottawa which is a show-
case for future players on
the world junior team.
Allen said one of the
biggest influences on his
hockey career has been
Dennis Knox, who was
his coach with the Huron
Perth major bantams and
guided him since then.
SHDHS rugby
EXETER — The South Huron District High
School rugby teams swept all three games from
Mitchell May 16 in Exeter.
The senior boys started with a 12-7 victory.
Justin Knee and Mitch Iredale scored the ties and
Jordan Darling kicked the convert.
The team was in control the whole day and were
full measure for their victory.
The juniors were short handed but still won 14-
0.
Colton Kerslake and Dave Reschke scored the
tries and Lachlan McGregor and Dave Muller each
kicked a convert.
The girls won their game 19-5 with Ashley
Roger scoring two tires and Anne Gregus scoring
one. Erica McTavish kicked two converts.
All in all it was a great day of rugby by all three
teams said coach Terry O'Rourke.
On May 18 the junior and senior boys competed
in Huron -Perth.
The junior boys defeated St. Anne's in their
semifinal 17-0 on tries from Shawn Morgan, Brent
Regier and Bilcke with Dave Reschke kicking the
convert.
In the final, the Panthers met a good Madill team
and although South Huron put forth an excellent
effort they lost 19-5 with Bilcke scoring the try.
All in all, the juniors played well and were full
measure for their silver medal, said O'Rourke.
The seniors played one of their most inspired
games of the season in the semifinal against first
place St. Anne's.
South Huron lost 5-0 but it was a superb effort,
said O'Rourke.
In the third place game South Huron again
played well defeating Madill 12-10. Darling scored
a try and kicked a convert and Charlie Jinks
scored his first career try.
All in all it was an excellent day for the seniors.
O'Rourke thanks the players who have played
their last rugby for South Huron including Jeff
Van Bergen, Mike Miller, Chad Taylor, Charlie
Jinks, Matt Iredale, Greg Morley, Eamon
O'Rourke, Darling, Sean Ellison, Adam Hayter and
Darren Love.
"He wanted all out
effort and didn't like
players who quit," said
Allen who added Knox
also made him account-
able and had him set
goals.
Allen said he would like
to thank all those who
have sponsored him dur-
ing his career, including
John Norris and Terry
Caldwell from Hyde
Brothers.
He also thanked
Strathroy for giving him
the opportunity to play
Junior B, as well the
older players on the team
who he said "helped him
a lot."
Another influence
according to Allen, was
Lucan's Jamie Cornish,
who was playing hockey
in England, and phoned
Allen on a regular basis
keeping him focused.
Although looking for-
ward to getting on the ice
with the Bulls, Allen said
one of the biggest chal-
lenges would be moving
away. "I'll miss the
dogs," he said."
Allen's sister Lindsay is
also on the move, with
plans to spend several

gram called Explore
through OSAP and was
accepted.
Although she can speak
only a "tiny bit" of
French, Allen is confident
by the time she gets
home she will be able to
speak the language.
After the first day of the
course, students are not
allowed to speak any-
thing but French.
