Volunteers rehab SHDHS athletes
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — "It's utilized
on their end, as well we
appreciate doing it
because it allows us to
work with young athletes
who are going to get bet-
ter quickly."
According to v n
B i o -
Connections
owner and
athletic
therapist
Kendra
Craig, the
physical reha-
bilitation pro-
gram for athletes at South
Huron District High
School (SHDHS) is more
successful than ever in its
third year.
Also donating their time
to rehab SHDHS athletes
are physio assistant Julie
MacDougald and physio
therapist Christa Novak.
Craig said each of the
volunteers do between an
hour and an hour and a
half a week, with busier
times of the year depend-
ing on which sports are
being played.
"Right now, it's rugby,
soccer and track so we're
really busy right now.
Those are three big ones
that usually have several
injuries.
"I like to think we're
pretty efficient and every
year gets more efficient.
We can actually handle
quite a few in that hour,
hour and half," said Craig.
If any extensive therapy
needs to be done, accord-
ing to Craig, the athlete
gets sent to the hospital or
to Bio -Connections.
"We try to do the
/a best we can, but
',e if there is
N something
to serious that
needs to be
done, we send
them over here."
Some of the
injuries looked after
carry on through the
year, and Craig said the
school exercise facilities
are used as rehab equip-
ment.
"We teach the athletes
`these are the exercises
we want you to do till we
see you next week, 'and
they go ahead and do
them."
The volunteers have also
benefited from the pro-
gram, seeing injuries they
wouldn't normally see.
"Because we get varied
sports there, I get basical-
ly the whole body. There

Craig said it is planned

like to give back."
