Small town connection to Internet food site
By Stephanie Mandziuk
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — How does a
small town resident end
up writing for an
American Website devot-
ed to culinary interests?
For Randi MacDonald of
Exeter, it all began with
the click of a mouse.
Last December
MacDonald began a ran-
dom search on the
Internet for a recipe and
came across www.egul-
let. org
She became an instant
fan. "I'm so happy I
found it", she says.
"Living in a small town, I
haven't found anybody
that shares my love for
cooking. To find this uni-
verse of people was
great!"
MacDonald decided to
join the not-for-profit
eGullet Society for
Culinary Arts & Letters.
As a member she was
given the opportunity to

One of MacDonald's first
articles takes a look at the
roadside honour system
in rural Ontario.
When she moved from
California to Exeter two -
and -a -half years ago, to
be with her partner
Robin, MacDonald was
fascinated by the system.
"The trust that people
are so honest and the box
of money just stays out,
that's amazing to me."
Now she regularly stops
for eggs on Highway 83,
east of Dashwood.
MacDonald also profiles
Hayter's Turkey Products
in Dashwood. Last year
she won a recipe contest
sponsored by the business
for her easy turkey chili.
She says she doesn't eat
red meat at all.
Culbert's Bakery in
Goderich, a popular spot
that's been around for
decades, is also profiled.
Randi's Fast and Easy Turkey Chili
2lbs Hayter's ground turkey
1 onion, chopped
1 green pepper, seeded and chopped
1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
2 cans kidney beans (1 red and 1 white), drained
and rinsed
1 can chili beans in sauce DO NOT DRAIN
1 can of corn (optional)
2 cans (796m1) peeled tomatoes, pureed in a
blender
1 package chili season mix
1 tsp chili powder (or more to taste)
1 tsp ground cumin
Recipe Directions
Saute turkey with chopped onion in a saucepan.
Drain. Add the rest of the ingredients. Simmer
over low heat for 1- 2 hours. Serve with chopped
onion, shredded cheese, sour cream and crushed
tortilla chips. This is a versatile recipe. You can
make it as hot as you like by adding more chili
powder or diced, chopped chilies.
The eGullet Website
offers a variety of classes:
tips on evaluating wine,
learning about food pre-
sentation and the art of
braising. For the non -
cooking types, that's cook-
ing with moist heat.
You'll also find articles
by popular chefs, recent
food news and links to
other sites.
For those who like to
travel, there are sugges-
tions on where to food
shop and where to eat.
MacDonald has had
responses from all over:
London, Toronto, Ottawa,
Michigan, Kentucky and
California to name a few.
She likes the interaction
and the chance to share
her interest with others.
In the meantime,
MacDonald is looking for
work as a chef. She con-
tinues to do some catering
from her home. You can
reach her at 235-3085.
One dozen brown eggs will cost you $1.50 at this unattended refrigerator located on a Highway 83 property east of Dashwood. Randi MacDonald of Exeter loves
to cook and she is still getting used to our roadside honour system when it comes to buying food. MacDonald wrote about food and cooking all last week on an
American Website devoted to culinary interests. (Left photo/submitted; right photo/Stephanie Mandziuk)
World's Best Mom essay contest' receives flood of responses
My Mom
Jodie is the
"BEST" because she is funny. You do
not want to be around her when she did
not get her tea. She tells me funny stuff
like "get back here." My Mom is lazy so
\he makes me cut the grass, but I love
my Mom. I help my Mom with the dish-
es
ishes and I clean the garage. My Mom is
the Best.
Favourite Expression is: "Bryan!" my
dad.

BEST
My Mom
Janet Lavery, is
the "BEST" because she helps me
with my home work, plays games
with me, and she cleans my
clothes. She lets me bake even
though I tend to burn things alot.
She's always there for me no mat-
ter what. She looks after me when
I'm sick and makes me laugh
when I'm sad. Mom loves music
and she dances around the kitchen when makingVel
supper.
P.S. I think my Mom should win
because she always says that Dad
never buys her jewellery any
more.
My Mom's favourite expression is:
"Just feel the love in the air!"
When I fight with my brother or
sister. Another thing she likes to
say is that no one can make you do
something, you choose to do it.

HONOURABLE
MENTION
My
Mom Karen, is the "BEST"
because she jumps on the
trampoline with us. Not to men-
tion we taught her how to do a
flip. We're not trying to teach her
how to land it yet! When my
Dad's gone she will buy treats for
us! She plays x -box with us and is
good at it. She has fun with us
whenever I'm walking she will
hold my hand. She's funnier than
any Mom in the
world. Last of all
she's so cool! Well,
hope you enjoyed my
paragraph on my Mom
being the best Mom in the world.
My Mom's favourite expression is:
Go to your room! Just kidding!
My Mom's favourite expression is
"you guys are the best kids ever
and I love you, but you still need
to clean."
