Pastor Van Bergen shared some tall fishing tales from her holiday time in North Carolina for the children's story. THE NEXT FEW WEEKS I WILL BE PUTTING IN A VARIETY OF MARINADES TO BE USED WITH THE BBQ IN MIND. AT HOME WE USE THE BBQ A LOT AS I FIND IT QUICK, EASY TO CLEAN UP AND GENERALLY A HIT WITH A VARIETY OF PEOPLE. To ME THAT MAKES MEAL PREPARATION MORE FUN. ENJOY THIS WONDERFUL MARINADE WITH CHICKEN, BEEF OR PORK. TERIYAKI MARINADE 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 cup soy sauce 5$ 3 tbsp brown sugar 3 mashed garlic cloves 1 tbsp grated ginger root (or 1 tsp dried ginger) 2 tbsp sherry (or 2 tbsp red wine vinegar) Mix ingredients together and set aside a small bit of marinade to baste the meat in the last minutes of BBQing. Put the remaining marinade in a large Ziploc bag with the meat of your choice and marinate at least 4 hours or overnight and in the refrigerator. Remove meat and BBQ. WOW. COMING UP: want to have some special features where I run a menu for a special occasion. SO... I am looking for the BEST POTATO SALAD for my summer picnic feature. Good Luck. munity bridal shower held in honour of Mary Ellen Webster last Thursday evening. The evening started with dessert and refreshments. Carol Pakenham wel- comed everyone and gave a little introduction on Webster. To start the pro- gram, Pakenham intro- duced the mother and daughter quartet for the evening, Joyce Dowson and daughter Brenda Consitt and Mona Stephenson and daughter Debbie Rathwell. They sang "Love Me Tender" and "Devoted To You." Pakenham then read a poem, "What Is A Soul Mate" and gave some words of wisdom called "The Top 10 Tried and True Bliss Makers for Couples." The Varna Players then returned for the Day Of with Debbie Rathwell— the star of the skit—acting as the bride, Webster. Other players were Marg Miller, Joan Beierling, Mavis Govier and Sjoujke Steenbeek. Everyone was able to laugh and enjoy this humorous skit. Webster was then the recipient of many useful and beautiful gifts. She then thanked everyone very graciously. Webster will be marrying Mark Finlayson June 25 in the Varna church and they are wished the very best. Tues., May 24 at 7:30 p.m. starting with dessert and refreshments, there will be community bridal shower for Heather Laurie. Plan to attend. Sun., May 29 there will be an open house for Hugh McBride celebrating his 80th birthday at the Complex . Varna church BBQ is Wed., June 15. Get your tickets and plan to attend. Varna -wide yard sales this weekend starting Fri., May 20 at 3 p.m. - ? and Sat., May 21 at 8 p.m. - ? and some on Sun., May 22. Anniversary service May 29 By Liz Sangster HENSALL CORRESPONDENT HENSALL — The Hensall shuffleboard scores for May 10 are as follows: Alice Thiel 501, Wilma Pennings 445, Merle McLellan 433, Ann Van Dorren 414, Harry Pennings 414, Edna Deitz 404, Donna Smale 398, Catherine DeCorte 379. At Hensall United Church, Dorothy Corbett was the greeter with Eric and Eleanor Mansfield looking after the ushering duties. The organist was Carol Carter. Mona Alderdice lit the Christ candle and also gave the reading. The ser- vice ended with benedic- tion and choral amen. Anyone wishing to con- tribute articles suitable for the yard sale can bring their donations to the Hensall United Church where they will be stored until sold. At Carmel Presbyterian Church, Tracy Whitson- Bahro was the minister with Joyce Pepper supply- ing the music for the ser- vice. Al Hoggarth and Harry Smith received the offer- ing. The service ended with benediction and choral amen. Anniversary service On Sun., May 29 Carmel Church will celebrate an anniversary service. There will be special music for this occasion. The Hensall and Community Horticultural Society is sponsoring a Canada Day decorating contest for homes and businesses. The deadline to enter is June 24. For more information phone 262-2715. Bill Gibson and Les Hills hosted a dinner party on Saturday evening for Mr. and Mrs. Dave Leyes, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cooper, and Mr. and Mrs. Ken Firman. The dinner had been purchased at the United Church auction held last fall. A great time was enjoyed by all. It consisted of the mouldy curd of soy beans and was used to treat carbuncles and boils. It took another couple thousand years before someone else discovered the link between mould and the killing of bacteria. It resulted in the discovery of penicillin. Some people wear magnetic bracelets to help their pain from osteoarthritis. It's difficult to prove whether they really help or not but a recent study concluded that these bracelets were "clinically useful". Having said that, there was still the suspicion that the bracelet had a placebo effect. However, if it works, who cares? The top ten drugs prescribed in 2004 included drugs to treat high cholesterol (Lipitor), a thyroid drug (Synthroid), heart and blood pressure drugs (Altace and Norvasc), and a pain reliever, Tylenol #3. Other drug groups in the top ten include a stomach acid reducer, a bronchodilator and stroke preventer (ASA). Remember when we were told not to drink milk when we had a cold? It was supposed to cause an increase in mucus production. In Australia, researchers proved this to be a myth.
