(photo/Stephanie Mandziuk) Van Allen receives first place at oratorical contest By Rhoda Rohde THAMES ROAD CORRESPONDENT THAMES ROAD — Dave Williams was in charge of the Christian Family and Mother's Day church service on Sunday. The introit was sung. Helen Weston lit the Christ candle and everyone shook hands. A pause for a silent prayer for all mothers—espe- cially for war mothers—was held. Sharon Lynn gave a Minute for Council and Robert Bray gave the joint needs assessment report. Williams gave the announcements and led in the Call to Worship and the Gathering Prayer responsively. The gathering hymn "Praise The Lord With the Sound of Trumpet" was sung. The affirmation of our faith, "A New Creed" was read in unison. The children's hymn, "This Is God's Wondrous World" was sung. Williams had a grapevine on a stand while everyone in the audience had a green leaf on which they were to write their and their families' names. The children gathered the completed leaves and put them on the vine for all families in the world; family supports; prayer; future families; sleeping chil- dren around the world; lonely people; feeding the hungry; building homes and hospitals; healing the sick; cele- brating Mother's Day; nutrients; Mission Outreach; Sunday school. Dave finished the vine with roots and fruit. The choir sang "This Day in May" accompanied by Marilyn Vandenbussche at the piano. Psalm 33 was read responsively. Williams read John 15:1-13 and his Sunday message was "The Strength Of Gentleness." Everyone sang "Dear Mother God." Murray and Beatrice Dawson received the offering. The closing hymn was sung "God Take My Hand." Williams gave the Commissioning and pronounced the Benediction. Everyone sang "May the God of Hope Go With Us."
