Five members of SHDHS community receive Excellence Awards
EXETER — Last week five members of the SHDHS
community were recognized for their contributions to
the school at the seventh annual Excellence in Public
Education Awards, co-sponsored by OSSTF and the
Avon Maitland District School Board.
Nick Anstett and Marcia Melick were recognized for
their contributions as students over the past five years.
Both Nick and Marcia are excellent students academi-
cally, while also being major contributors to extracur-
ricular activities at South Huron and leaders on
Students' Council. They are excellent role models and
deserving recipients of this award.
Staff members Glenda Burrell and George McEwan
received awards as well, in recognition of their excel-
lence as classroom teachers and of their contributions
outside the classroom also. Glenda has taught drama
at South Huron for 30 years and has been a driving
force in the promotion of the arts
throughout that time, especially
through her involvement in the annu-
al school show.
George has been at South Huron for
almost 20 years, sharing with his stu-
dents his two major passions, science
and soccer. Both Glenda and George
have made significant contributions
to the school and to the lives of their
students, making them deserving
award winners also.
Karen Brown, the chair of our
School Council, received an
Excellence in Education award for her contributions to
SHDHS and to Exeter Public School. Karen was an
active member of the EPS School Council for five years,
and has now been a member of our school council for
three years, chairing the council for the past two
years. She was recognized in particular for her
involvement in the community forums we have hosted
for the past two years.
We extend our congratulations and thanks to all five
of our Excellence in Education Award winners for
their ongoing contributions to life at South Huron.
The school show, "Return to Eden, 2048," was a

tremendous success last week and a fine example of
the talent, dedication, and hard work of the students
and staff at South Huron. This musical comedy show-
cased the talents of a large cast of student actors,
singers, dancers and musicians, and a large crew of
students and staff behind the scenes. It was a thor-
oughly enjoyable show and I would like to congratulate
all who were involved for their hard work over the
past few months.
Well done!
I would like to remind everyone again that our final
community forum is coming up on Thurs., May 26,
starting at 7 p.m. in the school library. The topic this
time is drug awareness and we will have on hand a
member of the OPP who will be bringing the drug
awareness kit. This kit is an excellent way for parents
to become aware of the various kinds of drugs and
drug paraphernalia to which our students are
exposed. It will also be an excellent opportunity for
parents to ask questions about drug use among our
young people and fmd out what they can do to help
with drug prevention.
Finally, I would like to remind parents that the
Response Forms from the report cards issued last
week are now due to be returned.
Students had to complete these and bring them home
for a parent signature. The signed forms are due back
by Tues., May 17.
