(photos/Stephanie Mandziuk) School bus companies seek more funding CLINTON — School bus companies looking for increased government funding arrived at Huron - Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell's constituency office in Clinton May 6. Rob Murphy of Murphy Bus Lines said bus compa- nies from across Ontario visited 103 MPPs to pre- sent them with a media campaign seeking an additional 20 cents per rider per day in govern- ment funding. The increase is what bus operators say they need to cover operating costs and continue providing the service parents and stu- dents want. Representatives from the Ontario School Bus Association (OSBA) also took copies of their pre- sentation to Queen's Park for Premier Dalton McGuinty and Education Minister Gerard Kennedy. According to a press release from the OSBA, the operating costs bus lines deal with are largely beyond their control — fuel prices have increased 40 per cent and insurance premiums have risen 100 per cent in the last four years. Inflation, govern- ment inspections, regula- tory changes and other market forces, including the price of new buses, have also driven up oper- ating costs. The OSBA claims provincial grants for stu- dent transportation are out of sync with escalating operating costs.
