Anna Keys conducted the meeting in Charles Reid's absence and read the minutes. Margaret Hayter gave three humorous readings called "The Old Car," "The Brooms" and "The Court Case." Reid had asked Keys to extend thanks to everyone who helped to make the Zone 8 Rally in April a success. Keys mentioned they must not forget to thank Reid. He was the planner who made everything run smoothly for the rally. High euchre winners were Eleanor McAsh and Leona McBride (tied) and Marlene Deichert. Consolation winners were Marjorie Stirling and Norene Hayter. There was discussion about having meetings on the second week of the month. Watch for the date and location of the next meeting. Varna UCW Thurs., May 5 the Varna UCW met at the home of Gordon and Ruby Hill for their May meeting. Gordon took the women back to the fish hatchery operated by the Bayfield Angle Association. He gave a brief explanation on the proceedure of the fish eggs, how long it takes them to hatch and how to look for dead ones. He gave the history of the fish hatcheries and explained what is done with the fish when hatched. Upon returning to the house Sharon Chuter thanked Gordon for his most interesting tour and presented him with a gift certificate. The meeting was very close to Mother's Day so the women were asked "What Do You Remember Most about Your Mom?". Chuter followed with Scripture and "Hymn for Mothers" was sung. Ruby Hill gave a reading that was read at her mother's funeral 27 years ago. Stirling gave a reading, "Somebody's Mother" followed by prayer by Chuter. Stirling read an article out of the Observer, "Imagine a World of Peace With Trees." Deb Rathwell thanked Ruby Hill, Chuter and Stirling for organizing the program for the meeting. Shirley Hill thanked the women who helped with the bowling league dinner and the seniors luncheon. Camp Menesetung Day is Mon., June 13, the theme being laughter. Rathwell read the Camp Menesetung suggestions that need to be done; May 14 is the Camp Blitz cleanup; May 14-21 is the Cabin Adopters Cleaning. The women were reminded of the upcoming com- munity bridal shower for Mary Ellen Webster Thurs., May 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the complex with dessert and refreshments to start. Everyone welcome! A community bridal shower will also be held for Heather Laurie May 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Varna Complex with dessert and refreshments to start. Everyone welcome! The women will be going to see "The 13th One" at the Blyth Theatre on Thurs., Aug. 25 beginning with dinner at the Blyth United Church. Anyone interested in tickets should call Sjoujke Steenbeek or Ruth Johnston. The next UCW meeting is June 2. Women then gathered around Ruby Hill's kitchen table and enjoyed food, refreshments and fellowship. Thank you to Hill for opening up her home.! Church service will be in Goshen Sun., May 15 and May 22. There will be no worship service in Goshen or Varna on May 29. Five Alive presents, "The Faith Story" with Dr. Barry Moore and Alan Davidson. This dynamic, thought-provoking and uplifting presenta- tion in word and song featuring trumpet, organ and favourite sacred music will be held in the Brucefield Church at 10:45 a.m. Women please bring sandwiches for a luncheon to follow. Everyone is welcome. Brucefield, Kippen, Varna and Goshen Bible School, featuring the Safari Adventure, will be held Aug. 2 to Aug. 5 in the Brucefield Church from 9 to 12 noon. Pick up your registration forms at church. Mark your calendars for the Varna Pork BBQ to be held June 15 at the Varna Complex. Tickets are avail- able. Varna yard sale days are May 20, 21 and 22. April 25 progressive euchre was played at the town- ship hall with high winners on white and blue cards, Mary Jacobs and Marjorie Reichert; second high Dorothy Smith and John Jacobs. Lone hands went to Ray Rader and the door prizes were won by Elmer Hayter; John Jacobs; Gord Smith; Noreen Hayter. The next regular meeting will be May 9 and progres- sive euchre on May 23 both at Hay Township Hall. Flowers were provid- ed by Glena Olcen, some of which came from her garden as early spring arrivals. These were divided into two bouquets and winners on April 20 were Pearl Heimrich and on April 27, Sheldon Wein and Lottie Grenier. Ken Gingerich, Lee Regier and Marg Hayter provided trans- portation for those in the village and Maplewoods area. Each week Hayter welcomed everyone to the Diner Program as it opened with singing of "0 Canada" and a grace before the meals with Olcen at the piano. Mary Koricina with volunteer workers con- tinues to make deli- cious meals each week. Readings were given by Hayter "I do not think of myself as Old," "Spring's coming, Plant a garden," and by Helen MacLean, "I like being old."
