(photo/Stephanie Mandziuk) By Mike Johnston TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF HENSALL — Every Wednesday from April to November Queensway retirement home resi- dents are treated to a visit from Popcorn, a Maltese dog, and his owner Paula Townsend as part of St. John Ambulance's thera- py dog program. During the winter months the residents receive cards and letters stamped with Popcorn's paw print. The program has been around since 1992, and Central Huron Branch 1084 based in Goderich has had it since 1996. The Goderich branch has 22 dogs and will soon test eight more. The dogs visit retirement communities, hospitals and the Bluewater Detention Centre for young offend- ers. "It's been proven time and time again that dogs can reach people when people can't," said St. John pet therapy co-ordi- nator Ann Cepukas. "They don't care what people look like, they have no hidden agendas, they're just there to wag their tail." She added tests have been done that show patient blood pressure goes down after a visit from a therapy dog. "It gives them some- thing to look forward to. Some of the people in the retirement community had pets before they moved in that they miss." Before a dog can be accepted as a pet therapy dog, they must show cer- tain capabilities, namely acceptance of strangers, sitting politely for petting, walking on a loose leash, walking through a crowd that includes wheelchairs, sitting on command and staying in place and react- ing well to another dog or distractions. Those who would like their dog to be a pet ther- apy dog can contact Anne Cepukas at (519) 357- 3843, or at annecepukas@sympati- co.ca. "We're always looking for good dogs and han- dlers. Anyone is wel- come," she said. Anything Tess is second best! Capsule Comments by Ernie Miatello Back in 1932, a drug company introduced Benzedrine inhalers as a nasal decongestant. It actually had an amphetamine (a stimulant) in it and was also being used to treat obesity as well as hyperactivity in children. It hasn't been available for decades. A good thing, too! Canola, safflower and olive oils are three good healthy oils to have in your kitchen. They are low in saturated fats and high in monounsaturated fats. What's the difference between an antiperspirant and a deodorant? An antiperspirant contains a chemical that closes the pores of the skin under the arms reducing the amount of perspiration. A deodorant only masks the odour with a fragrance. Speaking of perspiration, did you know that our feet have 250,000 sweat glands in them, mostly on the soles? These glands give off an average of half a pint (10 oz.) of perspiration a day... that's 22 gallons per year! (Phew!). Pharmacists are the most accessible of all healthcare professionals. As long as the pharmacy doors are open, there is always a pharmacist on duty. That's the law. Because of the specialized nature of the products we sell, we have to be available to answer your questions. It's a job we thoroughly enjoy. See you in our pharmacy soon! Huron Apothecary Ltd. On May 7 the First Ilderton Scouts and Beavers, along with staff from the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority, con- verged on the Denfield farm of Dave and Betty Siddall to plant almost 900 trees. There's a clean water creek nearby. The trees will eventually help recreate a more natural forest area and protect the creek from runoff, while keeping it cool.
