April 30, 1995 - Alice Koehler,
Postmaster at the Centralia and
Huron Park post offices is retiring
after 14 years of service to the two
communities. Supervising post-
master Keith Ahrens made a pre-
sentation.

May 11, 1985 - Two members
of the Exeter midgets were among
the 68 players who gathered in
Chatham over the weekend for a whirlwind two-day
camp to identify talent for the under 17 Ontario
midget hockey team. From Exeter were defenceman
Tim Moore and centre Bryan Quinn.
25 YEARS AGO
May 10, 1980 - The Milverton Suns, one of the top
ladies fastball teams in Canada, left Sunday morning
for a seven-day spring training camp in Florida.
Included in the 22 member roster taken south by
coach George Wicke are Lynne Farquhar of Exeter
and former Kirkton area native Iris Marshall now of
Toronto.
At their annual meeting, the Huron -Middlesex
Provincial Liberal Association appointed a new slate
of officers. Bernie Benn of Lucan is president and
vice-presidents are Joe Hogan, Exeter and Connie
Van Bussell, Lucan, secretary Karen Pfaff, Exeter and
past president Ian McAllister of Zurich.
35YEARS AGO
May 10, 1970 - In case you have forgotten, today is
"deadline day." It's the final day to drive with stud-
ded tires and also the final date for filing 1969
income tax forms. The former is to prevent "goug-
ing."
A long hockey season came to a happy end Sunday
as the Lucan-Ilderton Jets won the first OHA
Intermediate championship in the history of the dis-
trict with an exciting win over Napanee.
Sunday, the Exeter Pentecostal congregation offi-
cially established itself in its new quarters in the for-
mer main street United Church building where a
dedication service was performed.
40YEARS AGO
May 13, 1965 - After 25 years of service, municipal
clerk C.V. Pickard dropped a bombshell in the laps of
council Monday night and could provide them with
one of their biggest tasks of the year, that of finding a
replacement for his position as clerk -treasurer.
The new Exeter Lioness Club was established last
week with help from clubs in Vanastra, Grand Bend
and Bayfield. Officials of the new club are president
Ruth Eveland, vice-presidents Marion Knowles and
Bonnie Zawalsky, secretary Liz Stephens and trea-
surer Peg Sellers.
45 YEARS AGO
May 10, 1960 - Carfrey Cann and Gerald Godbolt
attended the provincial ACTS convention over the
weekend at Glen Holme.
Tenders will be called immediately for the con-
struction of an Exeter curling rink. Close to 60 share-
holders of the local club voted unanimously on the
riverbank site.

May 9, 1950 - Joyce Chambers of Crediton and
student of Exeter District High School won highest
honours in solo class at the Tri -School Music Festival
held in the gymtorium of the school.
Don Southcott of Exeter has completed his final
year in journalism at the University of Western
Ontario.
60YEARS AGO
May 10, 1945 - Playing at Leavitt's Theatre this
week are "Marriage is a Private Affair" starring Lana
Turner and John Hodiak and "Much Too Shy" with
George Formby.
70YEARS AGO
May 12, 1935 - The McCall-Frontenac Oil
Company of Toronto has purchased the corner prop-
erty of Mrs. E. Willis, main street south on which
they plan to erect a new and up-to-date service sta-
tion.
J.J. Knight retired last night after 51 years with th
Canadian National Railways. At the age of 17 he
entered the railway service in Exeter as an appren-
tice to learn the telegraph "key." In 1900 he was
made agent in Exeter and served as such for 12
years.
85YEARS AGO
May 9, 1920 - Mr. Charles Godbolt of Usborne
township won first for heavy draught team in har-
ness at both the Hensall and Clinton spring fairs.
Seniors' Perspective

Senior's May Meeting: 51 members and guests of
Exeter Senior Citizens met at the Legion on May 3 at
6 p.m. for a delicious potluck supper. President
Shirley Kirk welcomed all and opened the meeting
with a reading "Celebrating Life."
"Happy Birthday" was sung to June Hillen, Mary
Webber Bev Morgan, Lil McLellan, Anne Cottel and
Doris Sillery. Harry and Marian Dougall have a May
anniversary. Shirley read "Retirement" and she
thanked all the helpers at the last euchreama. Jane
Dearing gave the rally report. We are reminded of
the Huronview birthday party May 18 at 2 p.m. Six
ladies offered to donate cookies.
Jim Bearss reported on seniors' activities and gave
out pamphlets pertaining to South Huron happen-
ings. He reminded us of the upcoming trade fair in
June and told us the story of "A Man Named Fred."
Gerald Dearing was chairperson for the program.
He told some jokes and Richard Hokansson read
"The River Of Life," and "Mothers Day."
Entertainment by L'il Audrey (Audrey Haugh) was
enjoyed by all present. Door prize winners were
Doris Sillery, Richard Hokansson, Irvine Armstrong
and Audrey McDonald. Share The Wealth winners
were Madeline Sweetzer, Joe Stephens, Lois
Armstrong, Shirley Kirk, Jane Way, Jane Dearing,
Bill Thomas and Barb Miller. Audrey entertained us
again and Jane Dearing thanked her and presented
her with a gift of appreciation. The meeting closed
with The Seniors Prayer.

The Animal House Dinner Auction: for the Huron
SPCA Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals Animal Shelter. Held on June 17, 2005 at
the South Huron Rec. Centre. 5:30 p.m. Silent auc-
tion begins. Cash bar opens and Dinner is at 7:15
p.m. Ticket locations in Exeter are Exeter Animal
Hospital, Gaiser-Kneale Insurance and Tuckers and
Company. One of the goals of the SPCA is to provide
love, comfort and humane treatment to lost and
abandoned animals until they can be adopted into a
suitable home.
Bluewater Shrine Golf Tournament: Will be held at
the Ironwood Golf Course near Exeter Wed., June 1,
2005. Golfing starts at 10:30 a.m. from Hole #1 and
#10 at 8 -minute intervals. Golf cart is included. For

Chicken BBQ Caven Presbyterian Church, Exeter
on Friday, May 13. Time 5-7 p.m. at South Huron
Recreation Centre. Tickets available from the

Dashwood and Area Fire Department is holding
their annual Firemen's Breakfast. Their breakfast
will be held at the Fire Hall on Saturday, May 21,
2005. Times: 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and everyone is wel-
come.
Caven Presbyterian Church yard sale and bake
sale will be held on Saturday, June 4 from 7 a.m. to
1:30 p.m. The church address is 68 Main Street

Rubber Duck Race: $1000 first prize winner:
Exeter Lions and Exeter Junior D Hawks on May 14,
2005 at 11 a.m. Race starts at the MacNaughton
Dam on the Ausable River from Lions Park to Elliott

Centralia United Church yard and bake sale: Come

GOLF TOURNAMENT: Town and Country Support
Services are sponsoring a golf tournament on
August 6, 2005 at the Woodlands Links Golf Club,
Clinton ON. Shotgun start at 10 a.m. 18 holes of golf,
steak dinner, cash prizes, putting contest and hole
in one. Included for the day is prizes for everyone,
and best ball scramble. Experienced and novice

Library news
Exeter Public Library will close Sundays for the
summer season beginning May 22. Regular Sunday
hours will begin again September 11.
Check out the new magazines now available at the
library. These include Canadian House and Home
and Canadian House and Home Gardening Life. Also
available are Organic Style and Ontario Gardener.
Bring your card to borrow a magazine at your
library.
Access free computer time at the library. Do word
processing, search the net or check your e-mail. All
these services are available for no charge at your
library.

Lest we forget
Ward Andrew Pfaff was born on February 1917 in
Dearborn, Michigan. Ward Pfaff's father Wilbert
Pfaff from Dashwood, Ontario and his mother Jennie
Dejardine from Brewster, Ontario were married in
Grand Bend in the Manse on September 2, 1914.
Wilbert and Jennie were living in Dashwood, when
their first child was born on August 23, 1915 who
they named Retta Pfaff. The family moved to Detroit,
Michigan when Ward Pfaff was born on February 2,
1917.
