EXETER — A meeting
25 years ago has led a
retired Ontario
Provincial Police (OPP)
Detective to start a
fundraising drive in the
memory of the Terry
Fox Marathon of Hope.
Retired Detective
Rick Borden served with
the Huron County OPP
and was in Guelph in
July 1980.
"Twenty five years ago
in July 1980 I was
standing on the stairs of
City Hall in Guelph,
Ont.," said Borden.
"Beside me and shak-
ing my hand was Terry
Fox. I had on my best
pair of polished boots
and my newest uniform.
I had heard about this
incredible young man
that was running across
Canada to raise money
for research and a cure
for cancer.
"When I found out that
he had lost a leg to can-
cer and was running 26
miles a day I began to
follow his progress
across Canada.
"Terry was very quiet
that day. He smiled lis-
tened to a few speeches,
shook my hand and
looked me square in the
eyes and asked me ever
so politely but in a very
determined manner,
officer can you clear a
way for me, I have to get
running
"I saw the determina-
tion in his eyes and
knew I had to help him
get back on the road
running immediately. A
path was cleared and
Terry ran off east along
the main street of
Guelph...I was in my
police cruiser and
escorted him east out to
highway seven.
"I left him when one of
my fellow officers picked
up the escort at the
County line."
It was the last time
Borden saw Fox in per-
son but when he saw on
television the Canadian
Mint has struck a loonie
with Fox on it Borden
said to his wife "would-
n't it be wonderful if
everyone in Canada
bought two of Terry's
Loonies, one to keep in
his memory and one to
give to him through a
donation. "
Borden has set up a jar
at the Exeter OPP
detachment and has
started an e-mail cam-
paign to detachments
WORKING
EXTRA HARD FOR YOU
DURING TOYOTA
RED TAG DAYS...
across Ontario, hoping
they will also set up
j ars.
Borden said the
response has been
"unbelievable," reaching
across the province.
While the amount
raised across the
province has not been
totalled, as of Monday,
the Exeter jar had $105
in it.
Borden said he hopes
to keep the drive going
until the end of August
and his goal is to hope-
fully send a Brinks
Truck escorted by two
OPP cruisers to Thunder
Bay with a million
loonies in it.
In his e-mail to his fel-
low officers, Borden said
"I have always been
proud to have been a
police officer.
Make me prouder!"
Correction
In the April 27 edition of
the Times -Advocate, a let-
ter to the editor stated the
Bluewater Community
Development Fund is
working to raise $55,000.
The amount should have
read $500,000.
The Times -Advocate
regrets the error.
