Exeter native makes top 100 Canadian heroines

TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Harriet Brooks, Canada's first
female nuclear physicist, was born in Exeter,
Ont. in 1876.
Her achievements have been lauded in a
new book by Ottawa historian Merna Forster
entitled: "100 Canadian Heroines Famous
and Forgotten Faces."
Brooks grew up in a family of eight. She
was an exceptional student who won schol-
arships and eventually attended McGill
University. When she graduated in 1898,
Brooks joined a research group under
prominent physicist Ernest Rutherford of
Montreal.

Brooks conducted important
research on the youthful science of
radioactivity, providing the first
evidence that one element could
change into another.
Her academic career continued to
flourish until she became engaged
to a university professor while
tutoring at the women's college of
Columbia University in New York.
Brooks was advised her position
would be terminated because it
was deemed her work at the col-
lege would become secondary to
her role as a wife.
In response, Brooks wrote, "I
think also it is a duty I owe to my

THAMES ROAD - The
cancelled church service
of last Sunday took place
this Sunday with the
Exeter Independent Order
of Odd Fellows #67 and
the Pride of Huron
Rebekah Lodge #338 in
attendance Mr. Dave
Williams was in charge of
the service.
The Lodge members
paraded to the front of the
church with flags and the
introit was sung.
Dave Williams gave the
welcome and the
announcements. People
shook hands. Quinn Rush
lit the Christ Candle. Dave
Williams led in the call to
worship and gathering
prayer responsively.
Dave Williams told the
children a story about "A
Sling Shot and David &
Goliath" and he also said
he would like a lot of chil-
dren out next Sunday as
he will have a surprise. He
hopes everyone will wear
a flower as it will be
Mother's Sunday. The
choir sang "I Will Follow
Jesus" accompanied by
the organist Jean Hodgert.
Psalm 31 parts 1 & 3 was
led by Helen Coates
responsively. Bruce
Delbridge read the
Scripture Lesson.
Dave Williams message
was entitled "Thomas And
The Truth." The Hymn Of
Praise "Your Hand, 0
God" was sung.
Joan Skinner gave a
Minute For Mission "Leave
A Legacy."
The choir sang a second
anthem "The Family Of
God." Elson & Larry Lynn
received the offering, and
Joan Skinner carried an
item forward for the Food
Bank. The closing hymn
"Lead On, 0 Cloud Of
Promise" was sung.
Dave Williams gave the
Commissioning & pro-
nounced the Benediction.
Everyone stood and sang
the closing chorus and the
blessing for lunch and the
recession of flag party and
lodge members departed
first. The lodges support
Camp Trillium for children
with cancer, eye research
and send and pay for stu-
dents to tour United
Nations in New York
Arthritis Society and a
number of other things.
Announcements
On Wed., May 4th stand-
ing committees will meet
at 7:00 p.m. followed by
the Council meeting at
8:15 p.m. in the church
basement.

Thank you for your par-
ticipation at the April 5th
meeting of area churches.
We appreciated the dis-
cussion and your response
to our ideas. The written
responses indicate an
overwhelming permission
given for cooperation
amongst the churches in
this area. Of particular
interest was joint worship
services and youth min-
istry. The ad hoc commit-
tee continues to explore
these possibilities and
would welcome your
input. Anyone wishing to
join our committee would
be welcomed. Please con-
tact one of the committee
members. Watch for news
of future gatherings and
events.

Outraged, Brook's ended her engagement,
resigned from the college and travelled to Europe
where she worked for Marie Curie at the Curie
Institute.
She later married Frank Pitcher and abandoned
her career.
