During an emergency only use the phone if someone needs immediate assistance. • Teach children their address and phone number. • Note special assistance needed by people with disabilities. • Prepare for family health needs (medication, medical supplies, etc.) • Plan not to leave pets behind. Locate a local shelter. Remember farm animals too. • Learn basic CPR and First Aid • Establish a meeting place if family is separated in an emergency. • Find out school/daycares emergency procedures during severe weather. FLOODING • Tune into local radio stations • Stay away from flood waters Do not attempt to walk, drive or swim through floodwaters. • If flood waters are high allow them to flow freely into basement. • Do not stack sandbags against house. Take some precautions in case the hydro goes out. Be sure to have a radio, a light source and a heat source. PLAN FOR SPECIAL NEEDS People with medical devices, such as pain pumps, oxygen or dialy- sis, depend on a power supply. Cheryl Yost, of the Stratford General Hospital, advises these people to discuss how they can prepare themselves for a power outage with their health care provider. PREPARE AN EMERGENCY KIT Families can also create their personal emergency kits together. Filled with emergency food, clothing, a flashlight and a radio, the kits are invaluable in an emergency. Be sure your emergency kit and water supply will last for at least three days. Collect enough supplies to sustain yourself until additional help and supplies arrive. Store the items for your emergency kit in a bag which will be easy to carry if you are evacuated. Most importantly, be sure everyone in the family knows where the emergency kit is kept. SCHOOL CHILDREN DO NOT attempt to pick your children up at their school. School staff will be informed of an emergency and the safety of your chil- dren will be top priority. Media will inform you wHere to pick up your children when it is safe. DISABLED AND THE ELDERLY Please be sure to help disabled and elderly citizens in the communi- ty. Assist them in the event of evacuation by giving them rides to shelters, and helping them to pack a bag. r MUNICIPALITY OF LBLUEWATER BAYFIELD - HAY - HENSALL - STANLEY - ZURICH 2001 I, ito HURON COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT GARY WOOD (519) 482-5119 ext 2330 more info at www.huroncounty.ca LINCOLN J_J J— I Eric Campbell EXETER 235-1380 M `10 ete 9 ead4,Veg4 " AUTHORIZED SALES - SERVICE - LEASING Parts - General Repairs - Used Vehicles "SERVING SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO FOR 39 YEARS" 640 Main St. S., Exeter, Ontario NOM 1S1 (519) 235-03631-800-265-3476 Fax: (519) 235-1685 www.huronmotorproducts.gmcanada.com optimum LMI CHEVROLET GMC PONTIAC SU ICK r N.C.
