Mother's Day baptism planned in Centralia
By Mary Peterson
CENTRALIA CORRESPONDENT
CENTRALIA —
Welcome spring!
Have you noticed how
long the daffodils have
been in bloom this year?
Last weekend they were
buried under a very large
amount of deep, cold
snow. However, when the
snow melted, they reap-
peared in their golden
beauty. Even though it's a
cool, damp spring, it's
wonderful to see the flow-
ers and the green grass.
During that snowstorm
last weekend, Rev.
Michelle Down from
Centralia/Zion West
United Churches was
scheduled to exchange
worship with Rev. Bob
Biggar from Wesley Willis
United Church in Clinton.
Rev. Down braved the
poor driving conditions to
head north and lead wor-
ship. However, Centralia
was part of the wide-
spread area without elec-
tricity, so Rev. Biggar's
visit was postponed to
May 15.
On Sun., May 1 Rev.
Down returned to lead
worship at Centralia and
Zion West United
Churches.
The opening
hymn was
"Praise the Lord with the
Sound of Trumpets."
The children's hymn
was "Come Children Join
to Sing." Rev. Down's
message to the children
was entitled "You are
Called by God Into
Covenant."
Rev. Down thanked
everyone for their efforts
and the warm welcome
she received at her
Covenanting Service. She
thanked Marjorie Johns,
Margaret Hern, and choir
members from both
churches for the music.
Special music was provid-
ed by her aunt, uncle,
and cousin as well. She
thanked the flag bearers:
Mikenzie Skinner, Rikki-
Lee Skinner, and
DeeAndra Skinner
She also thanked every-
one for
their con-
tributions
to the worship, including
Larry Skinner, Andrea
French, Marina Jaques,
Sam Skinner, Larry Hern,
Donna Davis, Audrey
McFalls and Brad
Skinner. She also thanked
those who organized and
served the coffee and
cookies during the fellow-
ship that followed. It was
a very memorable occa-
sion.

Long lived, influential Elimville WI disbands
By Grace Pym
ELIMVILLE — The fmal
meeting of the Elimville
Women's Institute (WI)
was held April 27 at the
Malibu Restaurant where
seven members and six
guests gathered for their
noon lunch. President
Shirley Cooper welcomed
everyone.
A brief business meeting
followed at which time we
were reminded of the
Huron South District
Annual meeting May 19. A
place for the Tweedsmuir
History book and commu-
nity scrapbooks is still
being sought.
Words of appreciation
were expressed to the
Huron South District WI
president Joan Smith and
secretary Donna Lovie for
attending this meeting.
Tribute was also given to
each member for giving
her time and talents gen-
erously in order to keep
this organization function-
ing for 57 years.
Secretary Marjorie
Johns gave a humorous
reading and closed with
An Institute Prayer.
It is fitting in this final
report to include a brief
history of this organiza-
tion. The Elimville WI
branch was organized in
1948. The first meeting
was held at the home of
Mrs. Franklin (Ina)
Skinner and the first pres-
ident was Mrs. Kenneth
(Irene) Johns. The meet-
ing places varied; firstly in
the home, then for many
years in the Elimville
Township Hall, several
years hi the Elimville UC
basement and more
recently back to the
homes of the members.
In the peak years of its
existence membership
numbered around 60.
ATV driver charged
HENSALL — The male operator of an ATV was
stopped by police on the evening of April 27 on
Elizabeth Street in Hensall. The driver of the three -
wheel, 1986 white Honda ATV did not have a licence or
insurance. A 24 -year-old male from Bluewater faces
two charges.
Driver nabbed
SOUTH HURON — A 27 -year-old male from South
Huron has been charged with driving a motor vehicle
while under suspension. An officer came across a blue
Honda Civic, on Thames Road in South Huron, in the
early morning hours of April 28. The driver was
charged after the officer completed a licence check.
Always striving to achieve
its motto, "For Home and
Country", the positive
actions of this organiza-
tion brought many
improvements to home
and community living.
They worked closely with
the program for 4-H girls
as club sponsors and lead-
ers.
Many women learned
new crafts as well as
sewing and cooking skills
from the short courses
offered by the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture
and Food).
Valuable documents and
recorded happenings of
this organization were
entered into the
Tweedsmuir History Book,
and well -kept scrapbooks
contain community events
in stories and pictures.
Endorsing the disband-
ing of the Elimville WI
branch is cause for regret,
however we agree that we

are better women because
of its influence. There
have been many opportu-
nities to enhance our per-
sonal growth and to allow
our involvement in com-
munity action. We are
proud to have belonged to
such a worthy and well-
respected organization.
The wonderful friendships
we have made in the
branch, district and area
levels of WI will be long
remembered and trea-
sured.
There's a rumour that
you'll find Rev. Down
there helping with the
cooking at the grill!
The annual year and
bake sale will be held at
Centralia United Church
Sat., June 11 from 8 a.m.
until 12 noon. Donations
for the bake table, as well
as muffins and coffee for
the refreshment table,
would be appreciated.
Any donations for yard
sale items would be
appreciated at the church
by noon on Friday. These
items include toys, sports
items, household items,
and books. No clothing or
shoes this year please.
Volunteers to help would
be appreciated on Friday
starting at 1 p.m. and
Saturday morning from 7
a.m.
Hope to see you at some
of the upcoming worship
and events! A warm wel-
come is extended to all!
