South Huron team finishes second in Envirothon
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Local high
school students came up
big at the Southwestern
Regional Envirothon at
Pinery Provincial Park
April 19.
Five students in
Melanie McCowan's
Grade 11/12 Biology
class finished second in
the environmental work-
shop, which sees stu-
dents become experts on
topics such as wildlife,
aquatics, soil, forestry
and cultural landscapes.
Students prepare written
tests and make a 10 -
minute presentation.
Twelve schools from
Huron -Perth, Oxford,
Lambton and Middlesex
counties registered for
the event, said southwest
region chair Steve
Bowers of the Huron
Stewardship Council.
The event is put on by
the Ontario Forestry
Association, in partner-
ship with the Huron
Stewardship Council, the
Perth Stewardship
Network, local conserva-
tion authorities, the
Pinery Provincial Park
and the Friends of
Hullett.
St. Joseph's High
School from St. Thomas
came out the winners
and will compete at the
provincial competition
May 4-7 in Hamilton.
The internationals take
place in Springfield,
Missouri, July 18-24.
South Huron students
Nick Anstett, Brittany
Mills, Ashley Ralph,
Jessie Oke and Brittney
Schroeder spent the last
month preparing for
Envirothon, doing prac-
tice tests and attending a
two-day workshop. At
Wawanosh, the students
did stream studies, soil
tests and looked at
wildlife. They also pre-
pared at the Hullett
Provincial Wildlife
Management Area.
The South Huron stu-
dents described
Envirothon as intense
and something that
involved much reading
and preparation. For
their 10 -minute presen-
tation on preserving cul-
tural landscapes, they
were only given one
hour to get ready.
Anstett said he and his
teammates were sur-
prised at their strong fin-
ish since they went into
the event as underdogs.
He said some of the
other teams, such as St.
Free child car seat
check Saturday
EXETER — Driving children to school, childcare cen-
tres and recreational activities are daily routines for
most Huron County families.
Unfortunately, this routine often puts children at an
unnecessary risk. In Canada, motor vehicle crashes are
the number one killer of children and the second lead-
ing cause of injuries to children between the ages of one
and 14.
Most parents are aware that car seats, booster seats
and seat -belts save lives and prevent injuries; however,
the majority of child restraint systems are installed or
used incorrectly.
When used properly, car seats and booster seats can
reduce deaths by 90 per cent and serious injuries by 70
per cent. Nearly 40 per cent of two to five year old chil-
dren are improperly placed in adult seat -belts, rather
than car or booster seats. Improper use of car and
booster seats dramatically increase their risk of injury
in a crash.
To find out how to keep children of all ages safe in
motor vehicles, plan to attend the free car seat check at
Eric Campbell Ford Lincoln on 165 Main St. in Exeter
this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is spon-
sored by Eric Campbell Ford, Safety First Huron -Perth
and the Huron County Health Unit.
New legislation was passed in December 2004 to
toughen child car seat laws in Ontario. The legislation
mandates that booster seats are mandatory for children
too big for toddler seats and too small to be protected
by seat belts.
Booster seats must be used by preschool and school -
aged children up to age eight, weighing between 40-80
pounds (18-36 kg), with a standing height of less than
four feet, nine inches (145 cm) or maximum age of
eight.
This law requires infants, toddlers, preschoolers and
primary school -aged children to be buckled into the
appropriate child restraint.
The legislation will go into effect in the fall of 2005,
which gives parents, manufacturers and police the time
to make the adjustment. The penalty for not complying
with the law will be two demerit points. This law will
better protect child passengers. Children using seat-
belts instead of booster seats are 3.5 times more likely
to suffer significant injury and four times more likely to
suffer head injury. In 2003, only 20 to 30 per cent of
children who needed to be in booster seats in Ontario
were using them.
For more information on child car or booster seats,
contact the Huron County Health Unit at 1-877-837-
6143.
Joe's, had been together
for years and had more
experience than South
Huron's. For their sec-
ond -place finish, the
South Huron team
received a plaque, with
each member getting a
certificate. They thanked
McCowan for helping
them.
Bowers said
Envirothon tends to
grow each year and
interest has been so high
in Huron and Perth
counties that he hopes to
have a separate region
for those areas next
year.
"It's an opportunity for
the students to get out-
side," he said. "They
represent their school on
a team just like the soc-
cer team or hockey team
does."
Envirothon gives the
students a chance to
learn and have some
fun.
"It's a good program,"
Bowers said.
The Ontario Envirothon
has been in existence
since 1994, with the
southwest region taking
part for the last three
years. Over 200 schools
and 5,000 students from
Ontario take part every
year.
