HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Times Advocate, 2005-04-27, Page 11Wednesday, April 27, 2005 Exeter Times—Advocate 11 Biking in Texas raises money for Multiple Sclerosis HENSALL - Fun and fit- ness took on a whole new meaning for Queensway Residents when Queensways Social Worker Julie Keagan shared her recent expe- rience biking 180 miles from Houston to Austin, Texas to raise money to support Multiple Sclerosis research. Residents found Julie's account of her experi- ence inspirational espe- cially the fact that she biked in memory of her brother who died in 1998 at the age of 40 from the effects of MS. Following Julies presen- tation, residents worked through their exercise routine with renewed energy and thankfulness for what they are able to do. Pastor Nancy Corrigan of Exeter United Church led Worship Tuesday afternoon with volunteer Belva Fuss as pianist, and Marg Cole assisting residents. Gerry Fashions of London set up shop at Queensway all day Wednesday and numer- ous residents and family members shopped for the bright spring colours and styles. Volunteer Edna Deitz, was indis- pensable as she helped staff to measure and fit residents needing assis- tance with their choices. Volunteer, Marg Cole organized Euchre games Wednesday afternoon for the Euchre enthusiasts. Thursday afternoon resi- dents were busy making peanut butter balls at baking group. The first effort ended up becom- ing peanut butter squares due to a mea- suring error but the next batch turned out proper- ly. Those participating were prompted to share memories of their baking Several communities left without hydro By Muriel Lewis GRANTON CORRESPONDENT GRANTON — Mother nature really threw a curve on the week- end and the Kirkton- Woodham Optimists had to be very optimistic to carry through with their annual fish fry on Sun., April 24 at the Community Centre. The whole area of Grand Bend, Exeter, Lucan, including Kirkton was without hydro Saturday and Sunday due to heavy wet snow which caused tree branches to break. 4-H Beef Club The Thorndale 4-H Beef Club met for their first meeting at the home of Michael and Diane O'Shea, RR 3, Granton recently. The leaders are Jamie O'Shea, Jeremy O'Shea and Lucia Minton. They are planning to visit some feedlots and pack- ing plants. Anyone who would like to join the club should call Jamie O'Shea at 519- 225-2633. Robert Stiltz is the secretary. Granton -Wesley United At the Granton -Wesley United Church on Sun., April 24, Lay Pastor Val Hodgins led the service and the message was entitled "What Does God require of Me?". Meredith Dodds lit the Christ candle. The theme of the children's time was "How do we love our neighbour?". The min- istry of music was an anthem "He came singing Love." A planned exchange of pul- pits for churches in the North Middlesex area was cancelled because of the weather. No hydro in Kirkton At St. Paul's Anglican Church in Kirkton on Sun., April 24 the service was cancelled because of no hydro. Clandeboye WI The semi-annual dessert euchre sponsored by the Clandeboye Women's Institute Tues., April 19 was well attend- ed at St. James Church Hall. Prizes for euchre were awarded for high scores to Carolyn Hardy and Jac VanGeel, for lone hands to Dorothy Trevithick and Kay Lankin, for low scores to Shirley Noyes and Elsie Jones. Margaret Young had a lucky cup and Dorothy Trevithick a lucky birth- day. Door prizes were won by Muriel Culbert, Janet Semen, Betty Gilfoyle, Edith Eaton, Jac VanGeel, Dorothy Revington, Marjorie Park, Norah Wissel, Ellen Thomson, Corinne VanGeel and Evelyn McNaughton.
