THAMES ROAD — The April meeting of the UCW was
held Tuesday evening with 29 women and two guests
present. The Christian Development Committee was in
charge of the meeting.
The meeting table had a doily and a pretty bouquet of
flowers on it. Janet Coward opened the meeting by wel-
coming everyone and gave a reading.
Beatrice Dawson gave a reading "April." iMEs
Kathy Bray read the Scripture, John
21:15-17. Sandra Rowe introduced guest
speakers Jennifer Branderhorst and Tara Truemner.
Branderhorst spoke about a young man coming to her
church (Dutch Reformed Church, Exeter) and asking for
support of his work in Haiti as a volunteer with the
"Children of the Promise" in Haiti.
Branderhorst and Truemner got interested in the
work and they and six others went to Haiti for eight
days to volunteer their help with the "Children of the
Promise." They showed a video of when they were
there. It was a very interesting, informative program.
They were thanked by Sandra Rowe and she presented
them with gifts.
Kathy Bray received the offering and Beatrice Dawson
gave the offertory prayer. Everyone sang "How Great
Thou Art." Carolyn Johns, president asked everyone to
stand and repeat UCW Purpose. Diane Jeffery, secretary
took the roll call which was "Where was your Childhood
Church," and read the minutes of the last meeting.
The correspondence was dealt with. Joan Skinner
gave the treasurer's report. Standing committee leaders
gave reports; Westminster weekend June 3, 4 and 5;
summer events at Siloam Church, London in July; a day
at Camp Menesetung June 13. Judith Parker gave a
council report. Strawberry and Ham tickets will be
available at the council meeting on May 4. The women
were asked to cater a wedding in January 2006.
The UCW Prayer closed the meeting. A delicious
dessert and beverage prepared by Marilyn
Vandenbussche, Leona Cottle, Sharon Lynn and Marilyn
Pym was partaken of which brought an enjoyable
evening to a close.
Church service
Thames Road-Elimville Church joined with Zion West,
Centralia and Exeter United for the Canadian Food
Grains Bank service in Exeter Sunday morning. Rev.
Paul Ross welcomed everyone and gave the announce-
ments. Mitchell Webster lit the Christ candle. Murray
Dawson spoke about the Food Grains Bank.
Rev. Paul Ross led in the Rev. Michelle Down talked to
the children about seeds. You have to plant them, they
need water, sun—they are seeds of love, hope, and faith.
The extended choir sang "Is This Not the Land of
Beulah" accompanied by pianist Anne Spivey (who
accompanied on the organ for the hymns). Bob
Robilliard was the choir leader. Brent Caslick intro-
duced the guest speaker Brenda Mitchell who gave a
very interesting message on the Canadian Food Grains
Bank.
Mitchell is a retired teacher who recently participated
in a Canadian Food Grains tour to Kenya and Tanzania.
An immigrant from the UK, Mitchell has lived in Canada
for 40 years. During that time, she has lived for two
years in Argentina and spent 10 years living and work-
ing in South Korea.
She was thanked by George Pratt and presented with
a gift. The hymn "For the Fruit of all Creation" was
sung.
Nancy Corrigan led in prayer of thanks and concern.
The offering was received and Rev. Ross played a med-
ley of different pieces of music accompanied by Spivey
which was much enjoyed. The hymn "May the God of
Hope" was sung. The closing chorus "Go Now in Peace"
was sung.
Rev. Ross, Rev. Alun Thomas, Rev. Down, Williams
and Corrigan all stood across the front of the church.
Corrigan asked grace before everyone went downstairs
for the delicious chili dinner, bread, cheese, cookies,
donuts and beverages which brought a very informative
and interesting service to a close. The greeters and ush-
