(photos/Scott Nixon) County still in budget deliberations By Pauline Kerr SPECIAL TO THE T -A GODERICH — The next meeting of the county's Committee of the Whole on April 19 will be another budget meeting. The budget increase pro- posed for the county sits somewhere around 18 per cent, and county council- lors continue to struggle with a budget most agree is much too high. During the March 15 meeting of the Committee of the Whole, several bud- get motions were made and defeated. County Coun. Rob Morley made the motion, second- ed by County Coun. Joe Sethi, that the budget be set at a 17.4 per cent increase. Next it was a motion by county Coun. Deb Shewfelt, seconded by county Coun. Ben Van Diepenbeek, for a tax increase of 13.5 per cent, based on a million dollar loan from reserves to go toward bridge and culvert work. Then Van Diepenbeek made a motion, seconded by county Coun. Bert Dykstra, that $500,000 be removed from the General Capital Reserve to get the increase down to 16 per cent. The recorded vote ended in a tie, with county councillors Murray Scott, Paul Klopp, Neil Rintoul, Dykstra, Seili, Van Diepenbeek and Warden Doug Layton in favour and John Bezaire, Shewfelt, Bill Dowson, Dorothy Kelly, Morley, Jim Fergusson and Rosemary Rognvaldson against. Four councillors were absent. A tied vote defeats the motion.
