Grand Bend Women's
Institute turns 60
By Stephanie Mandziuk
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
GRAND BEND — The Grand Bend Women's
Institute is celebrating its 60th anniversary April 7 at
the Grand Bend Legion.
The group is hosting an education fair/luncheon.
It all gets underway at 11 a.m. and wraps up at 5
p.m.
There will be a number of displays including tat-
ting, quilting, knitting, crochet, cross stitch, embroi-
dery and rug hooking.
The fair will also feature a healthy lifestyle exhibit,
a milk pasteurization display and penny auction
sale.
Historically, Women's Institutes across Canada
have played a significant role in promoting positive
change.
In Ontario the organization has seen many of its
resolutions come to fruition including mandatory
stopping for school buses with flashing lights, signs
at railway crossings, and the use of easily under-
stood labels on food products.
The Grand Bend Women's Institute is a strong
community support group and regularly donates to
various charities.
Caven honours group
for 105 years of service
EXETER — The Caven
Presbyterian Church
Women (PCW) has recent-
ly folded after 105 years of
service.
In honour of the many
women who have been a
driving force in the life of
the congregation, the
church session has
arranged for a special ser-
vice of worship to be held
at Caven Presbyterian
Church on Sun., April 17
at 10:30 a.m.
A luncheon and time for
fellowship will follow. The
church is attempting to
contact all present and
past PCW members (previ-
ously known as the
Women's Missionary
Society or WMS), as well
as families of deceased
members, to invite them
to the service and lun-
cheon.
Invitations have been
sent out by mail. If any-
one—a former PCW mem-
ber or family member—
has not received an invita-
tion and would like to
attend, please be assured
that everyone is welcome.
"It has been a daunting
task," according to session
member Carol Aim Keys,
"trying to make contact
with everyone. We know
we have likely missed
some people, and we want
to assure anyone with a
history at Caven
Presbyterian that they are
more than welcome to
come to this service and
the lunch following."
The church is also ask-
ing that if anyone knows
of someone now living
outside this area who
should be contacted, let
them know about this ser-
vice or call the church at
235-2784 (e-mail:
caven@tcc.on.ca) and
leave a message and the
church will make the con-
tact. Caven Presbyterian is
located at 68 Main St., S.,
Exeter, Ontario.
Capsule Comments

To reduce the risk of injury from falls in the
home, check for medications that may cause
drowsiness. Clean up clutter in your home and
check for inadequate lighting, slippery floors,
loose rugs and raised thresholds.
If you have a problem with excess earwax, you can first try a little
mineral or olive oil warmed to room temperature and instill it in the
ear. Let it sit for a while then flush out with warm water. Most cases
will resolve with this treatment. If not, check with our pharmacists
for special drops available without a prescription.
There was a recent study about the alarming number of pregnant
women who take medications while pregnant. It's good to get
advice from your doctor and pharmacist to ensure the drug is safe
and does not cause harm to the fetus. There are reference texts
categorizing most drugs for safe use during pregnancy. If you are
pregnant and want to self -medicate, before you take jt, talk about
it.
We're not trying to promote red wine consumption in this column
but it seems it does a better job of reducing the risk of prostate
cancer than beer, spirits or white wine.
We work hard to give you the best possible service for all your
medication needs.
