Past President and Charter Member
of Rotary Club of Grand Bend
Grand Bend Rotary Club celebrates 100 years!
The most outstanding contribution made by the club
was its commitment to provide a 9 kilometre nature trail
from Grand Bend to the Pinery Provincial Park. The trail
was completed 5 years ago and the total cost of
$200,000 is fully paid off.
The club also funded the Canada 2001 Summer
Games in the amount of $20,000 and helped raise
approximately $30,000 to replace the aging Grand Bend
Tourist Information booth in conjunction with the Grand
Bend Chamber of Commerce.
At the beginning of 2002 the club agreed to pledge the
sums of $50,000 over five years to both the Grand Bend
Area Community Health Centre and the Partnership to
extend the Public School and add an Recreation Centre.
Both these pledges have been paid off in full already.
The club has contributed over $500,000 to community
and international services since its charter in 1991,
including donations to a host of local charities including
the Walkerton water disaster, the Grand Bend policing
program, sports groups, student conferences, cultural
and educational pursuits etc.
The club is presently working on developing a student
aid program with the local high schools. This will pre-
sent high school students with opportunities to fulfill their
public service curriculum requirements under the direc-
tion of Rotary Club members.
The club has been actively involved in international ser-
vices through Rotary International and has donated,
among other contributions, $6,000 to a water project in
Nigeria, $6,000 supporting Rotary Youth Exchange pro-
grams, $6,000 to Rotary International Polio Plus
Program. In November of 1998 through the efforts of
one of our members and other local pulse growers and
distributors, close to $40,000 worth of food products
were pledged to hurricane ravaged Honduras. Through
a process of matching grants provided by CIDA, this
total grew ultimately to approximately $200,000 for direly
needed food supplies.
More recently the club instigated sponsorship of Living
Stones Orphanage for some of the 5,000 street kids in
Davao, Mindanao, Philippines. Through matching grants

from Rotary International (RI) and the Canadian Rotary
Committee for International development (CRCID) based
on initial contributions from the Grand Bend and
Stratford Rotary Clubs the final donation amounted to
$29,810 for the purchase of furnishings, vitally needed
pharmaceuticals and the purchase of a used van.
The club will probably be involved this year with other
Area 3 clubs to provide assistance to troubled
Zimbabwe, Africa.
The club has hosted group study exchange teams
from Germany, England, India, Holland, Korea, Taiwan
and Italy over the past seven years and International
Exchange students from New Zealand, Mexico and
France have been sponsored by the Grand Bend Club.
In addition to the financial contributions made by the
club it is worthy of note that the following major projects
were directed by Rotarians and strongly supported by
other Rotarians and their spouses.
The most recent achievement by a Rotarian was the
campaign to save the Grand Bend Public School from
closure. The Campaign was directed by club member
Chris Thompson, ably supported by rotarian Mary Lou
Haymen. The campaign was extremely successful and
the existing school will remain open and will be extended
to house community activities. The campaign commit-
tee will be required to fundraise to the extent of
$1,000,000 to complete this extension. The Club
pledged $50,000 over five years in support of Chris'
Committee. This pledge has already been paid off.
HATS OFF FOR CANCER
Rotarian spouse Jacqui Krech organized this project
which involves collecting and donating new hats to kids
undergoing chemotherapy. To date 10,000 hats have
been collected and delivered to the various hospitals and
cancer camps across Canada.
Other Rotarians or spouses fill many roles in the com-
munity in such areas as municipal councillor, chairman
of the Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the 2004
International Plowing Match, fundraiser captain for Heart
and Stroke, committee member of the Bosanquet
Recreation committee, treasurer of Huron Country
Playhouse, committee member of the Lambton Trail
committee and volunteers for the Adult Day Centre in
Grand Bend, the VON Palliative Care program, Lambton
Heritage Museum public school program. Rotarians and
spouses are involved to some extent in many other com-
munity endeavours too numerous to mention.
A very successful PROBUS club (a Rotary sponsored
social club for retired businessmen) was launched
through the efforts of Rotarian Don Tedford. The seven-
ty-five or more members provide a rich volunteer pool for
special occasions. Most recently, Rotarian spouse Joan
Johnson was instrumental in starting a second PROBUS
club for women in the Grand Bend Area and already has
close to 100 members.
The Rotary Club of Grand Bend has a very high profile
in the Grand Bend Area and is highly thought of for its
dedication to serving the Grand Bend and Area commu-
nity during the 10 years since it was chartered.
