ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
CELEBRATES ITS 100TH
YEAR
Little did Paul Harris, a young
Chicago lawyer, ever think
that the meeting he organized
on February 23rd 1905 with
three friends would be the
beginning of the world's first
service club. His idea was
that businessmen would get
together in a spirit of cama-
raderie to enjoy each other's
company and enlarge their
circle of business and profes-
sional acquaintances. This
group of four originals grew to
five and this was the start of
the Rotary Club of Chicago;
this quickly grew to 30 mem-
bers. The meetings initially
rotated around the various
offices of the members. Thus
the term "Rotary " was
spawned.
Today there are over 1.2 mil-
lion Rotarians worldwide,
from 31,939 clubs in 166
countries.
The motto "Service above
self" clearly illustrates the
central theme of the Rotary
\`\\ movement and every Rotary
club is expected to perform in
four "avenues of service"
annually. These avenues are:
Club Service (service within
one's club), Community
Service, International Service
and Vocational Service (serv-
ing through one's business or
profession in areas such as
career guidance and training
programs for young people).
The application of the Rotary
"Four Way Test" by each
member is the way in which
they ensure they closely fol-
low the beliefs of Rotary
International. 1) Is it the
truth? 2) Is it fair to all con-
cerned?
3) Will it build goodwill and
better friendship?
4) Will it be beneficial to all
concerned?
On February 23rd 2005
Rotary International cele-
brates its centennial. There
will be an international confer-
ence in Chicago (the birth-
place of Rotary) in June and
other commemorative events
will be held all over the world.
GRAND BEND ROTARY

The Rotary Club of Grand

its own members the club
also is required to serve in the
areas of vocational, commu-
nity and international services.

directed towards these goals.
