(photo/Scott Nixon) Relay for Life returns to South Huron EXETER — Due to the overwhelming success last year, South Huron District High School is hosting its second Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life on Fri., June 10. Relay for Life is a 12 hour relay which begins at 7 p.m. and runs until 7 a.m. the following morning. Last year, SHDHS set a goal of $10,000 and were able to raise slightly more than $15,000. This year they are setting a goal of $20,000 to be raised for the Canadian Cancer Society. The relay consists of teams of ten persons each, with each team member being required to set a minimal goal of raising $100 each to make the overall team total $1,000. Although the main activity during the relay is to walk around the high school track for 12 hours, there are many other events which take place throughout the night. The opening lap of the relay is called the Survivor Victory Lap, done by cancer survivors. As the sky begins to darken, the Luminary Ceremony begins when luminaries surrounding the track are lit. Luminaries are purchased for $5 a piece, and are lit either in memory or in honour of a person who has bat- tled cancer. Other events included in the evening are various games, music and many more activities. As with last year, Relay for Life is opened to both stu- dent and community teams. Registration will begin late March to early April, and community teams will be able to register their team at Scotia Bank in Exeter. For more information on Relay for Life 2005, visit www.cancer.ca.
