Women's Institute plans for anniversary Town and Country Homemakers donation
GRAND BEND — Maggie Brennan,
Public Education Co-ordinator for the
Huron County Alzheimer Society was
the guest speaker at the Grand Bend
Women's Institute February meeting.
Brennan explained dementia is a set
of symptoms which includes loss of
memory, understanding and judgment.
Alzheimer's disease is progressive,
degenerative and irreversible. Memory
loss affects day to day function and
causes poor judgment, changes
in mood and behaviour.
Age and family history are
known to be associated with
Alzheimer's disease. Head
injury, Down syndrome, hormone
replacement therapy and aluminum
are risk factors under investigation.
There is no single test for a diagnosis
for Alzheimer's. Although there are
four drugs used to treat the symptoms
of Alzheimer's disease, there is no
cure.
There is ongoing research for causes,
risk factors, diagnostic tools, treat-
ments and improving care.
Business meeting
President Cass Lovie presided over
the business meeting. She opened the
meeting with a reading:
'If you want happiness for an hour
take a nap. If you want happiness for
a day go fishing. If you want happi-
ness for a year inherit a fortune. If you
want happiness for a lifetime help
someone.'
60th anniversary
The June bus trip to the Grand River
Cruise was brought to the group's
attention. Plans to attend the
Quilt, Quills and Teddy Bear
Show in Toronto are being
completed. A location for the
South Huron District picnic will
be reserved. An outline of the
activities planned to celebrate the 60th
anniversary was announced.
An education fair, which will be open
to the community, interested people
and all branches of the Women's
Institute will be held April 7, 11 a.m. to
5 p.m. at the Grand Bend Legion.
Safety, health, domestic science and
Women's Institute displays will be on
view. Several hands-on stations will be
set up. Lunch will be available.
