Exeter Jr. `D' Hawks get ready for Mitchell
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER - The Exeter
Hawks will face Mitchell in
the opening round of the
playoffs, with game one
Friday in Exeter at 8:30
p.m.
Exeter split their last two
games of the regular sea-
son with a 5-4 loss Friday
in Exeter against Lambeth
before rebounding
Saturday with a 6-4 win in
Belmont.
The Hawks finished the
regular season with a 23-
14-2-1 record for 49
points, fourth in the con-
ference.
With 54 points the Lucan
Irish took first in the con-
ference, one up on
Lambeth and two ahead of
Mt. Brydges.
Mitchell finished with a
21-14-5-0 record, two
back of Exeter.
First overall in the
league was Hagersville
with 64 points, with
Tavistock in second at 57
points.
Exeter coach Derek
Macnair said he wasn't
happy with the effort of
the team Friday night.
"We played 20 minutes
of a 60 minute
game...we're getting ready
to go into the playoffs and
that's not the way I want-
ed to see it."
But Macnair added he
thought the team was on
the right page and if they
play in the playoffs like
they did in the third period
they would be fine.
"My older leaders are
starting to become lead-
ers. They're starting to
talk in the dressing room
and that's a good sign,"
said Macnair.
The Hawks were down
two goals early Friday
with Lambeth jumping on
a power play chance just
under two minutes in and
making it 2-0 30 seconds
later.
Darcy McCutcheon got
the Hawks on the board a
minute later but the
Lancers restored their
two -goal margin before
the period was over.
The Hawks were looking
for a fast start in the sec-
ond period and they got
with a power play they
took advantage of when
Matt Vlemmix jammed in
a rebound off a shot from
the point.
But Lambeth again
restored its lead when
Tyler Gore was allowed to
cut across the slot and
beat Exeter goalie Justin
Hayter.
Despite 21 shots in the
second period, and out -
shooting the visitors 45-34
overall, the Hawks were
unable get anything else
by Lambeth goalie Ben
Weir in the second period.
With time winding down
in the period, the Hawks
were unable to control the
puck in their own zone,
letting it get out front to
Alex Omicciolli who beat
Hayter for a 5-2 lead.
Vlemmix got the Hawks
close early in the third
when he lead a rush into
the Lambeth zone before
jamming in the rebound
fora 5-3 lead.
With a goal off the stick
of Justin LaPorte, the
Hawks were back in the
game with eight minutes
left, but it was all they
could get.
Along with his two goals,
Vlemmix had two assists,
with single points from
Nathan Regier, Joe
Nesbitt, Justin Young,
Tony Regier and Darryl
Houston.
"They wanted it more
than we did. If we had
played the whole game
like we did the third peri-
od, we would have won
the hockey game," said
Macnair.
Both teams were 1-3
with the man advantage.
Saturday night in
Belmont, the Hawks were
again down early, giving
up the lone first period
goal.
But Exeter rebounded
with four goals in the sec-
ond period from Jason
Stuckless, Joe Nesbitt,
Justin Young, and Scott
Davies to take a 4-3 lead
into the third.
A shorthanded marker
by Stuckless early in the
period proved to be the
winner with Justin Knee
adding an insurance
marker late in the game.
Stuckless, Vlemmix,
Knee and Houston each
had two assists in the win,
with Davies also picking
up an assist.
One of the keys for the
Hawks to win the series,
according to Macnair, will
be the third and fourth
lines.
"It's going to be tight
checking hockey and
they'll have someone on
the top line."
Game two in the series
will be Sunday in Mitchell
at 7 p.m. with game three
in Exeter Feb. 25 at 8:30
p.m.
