(photo/Pat Bolen) By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF HENSALL — Mike Johnson advanced the Hensall Sherwoods to the next round of the playoffs Saturday night in Hensall, at 5:38 of the first overtime period to eliminate the Monkton Wildcats in three straight games. The goal capped a rally for the Sherwoods that brought them back from a 4-1 deficit in the third period to force the over- time. Hensall had won the first two games of the Irish face Bombers in round one By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF LUCAN — The Lucan Irish will take on the Belmont Bombers in the open- ing round of the playoffs, with game one tonight (Wednesday) in Lucan at 7:45 p.m. The Irish took first in the conference with a 26-12-2-0 record for 54 points, one ahead of Lambeth and two up on Mt. Brydges. Belmont finished eighth with an 8- 26-3-3 for 22 points. The Irish finished their regular sea- son with a win, a tie, and a loss. After making a game Tuesday night in Mt. Brydges with a 4-4 tie, the Irish were at home Wednesday to Belmont. Tyler French and Bob Martin fired first period goals with Belmont reply- ing once for a 2-1 Lucan lead. After a scoreless second period, the Irish two more in the third period for a 4-2 win, with Martin and French each adding another. Game two in the series will be Sunday in Lucan at 1:45 p.m. with game three in Belmont Feb. 23. SHDHS Panthers basketball EXETER — The junior boys basketball team played St. Anne's Feb. 9 in Clinton. South Huron came away with a convincing victory by outscoringtheir oppo- nent 44 - 22. The team came out strong and built an early lead and continued this type of play throughout the game. The whole team con- tributed strong efforts to the defensive and offen- sive parts of the game. The top scorers for the game were Shawn Morgan with 16 points., Tyler Knip with 10 points, and Brent Johns with six. Lachlan Macgregor and AJ Miller each had four. Overall, it was a very strong effort by the team. The senior boys defeat- ed St. Annes 49-37 with a good overall effort team effort Feb. 9. Pete Clifford led the way with 19 points, followed by Tyler Robinson with 14, Spencer Baehnisch with eight, and Eric Corman with six. Chris Hern also played well. Wednesday night in Hensall, the Sherwoods built a 4-0 lead midway through the second peri- od, before hanging on for a 4-3 win and a 1-0 lead in the series. Jeremy Geoffrey opened the scoring in the first period and added another for a 2-0 lead. Chris Downie and Jeff Finkbeiner extended the Sherwood lead to 4-0 but it was all Monkton after that. The Wildcats got on the board before the period was over and cut the lead to 4-2 early in the third. Monkton added a goal in the dying seconds to get within one but it was all they could get. Friday night in Monkton, three goals in the first period by Hensall, including two by Jeremy Van Bergen and one from Jeff MacLean built a 3-0 lead. The Sherwoods extend- ed their lead to 5-0 in the second on goals from Johnson and Jeff Finkbeiner. The teams traded goals in the third with Finkbeiner adding the final Hensall goal in the 6-1 win and a 2-0 lead. Trying to avoid elimi- nation Saturday night, the Wildcats fired one in the first period and three more in the second for a 4-1 lead. But a power play marker by Geoffrey early in the final period got the Sherwoods to within two goals.
