Huron
County
budgets
GODE H — Huron
County Council is about
to start looking at its
budget, which could
bring increases of 20
per cent, according to
the Clinton News
Record.
The budget was dis-
cussed at a meeting
Feb. 3 with the topic
being whether to look
at department spending
line by line.
Bluewater Coun. Paul
Klopp said county coun-
cil should go through
the budgets line by line
to "know where the
costs are."
South Huron Coun.
Dave Urlin questioned
whether the council
should line -by-line deci-
sion making on the
budget.
Huron East Coun.
Joseph Seili replied,
"that's why the county
is in the mess it is, it
wasn't done line by
line."

charge of $55,000 for a
medical centre inter-

Hospitals get
equipment funding
GODERICH — The Dalton McGuinty government
announced last week $2,649,556 in medical equipment
funding for hospitals in Huron and Bruce counties.
Exeter's South Huron Hospital will receive $259,264
under the program. Other funding includes: the
Alexander Marine & General Hospital in Goderich will
receive $325,973; the Wingham and District Hospital
will receive $321,191; the Clinton Public Hospital will
receive $ 257,254; and the Seaforth Hospital will
receive $261,418. The South Bruce Grey Health Centre
will receive $1,224,456.
"Our government is absolutely committed to provid-
ing quality care and better access through state-of-the-
art medical and diagnostic equipment," Huron -Bruce
MPP Carol Mitchell said last week.
"This investment will mean that the residents of
Huron and Bruce will have better access to the equip-
ment they need, and the care they deserve." The fund-
ing is part of the government's $340 -million invest-
ment, announced last week, to upgrade and increase
diagnostic and medical equipment in hospitals and
long-term care homes across the province. This year's
investment is the single largest investment in diagnos-
tic and medical equipment ever in Ontario and
Canada.
"Patients require the very best care, whether they
are in hospitals or long-term care homes," Health
Minister George Smitherman said.
"We are modernizing our diagnostic and medical
equipment to improve the care patients are receiving,
and also reduce the time they have to wait to receive
that care."
Two weeks ago the minister announced more than
$120 million to increase the number of MRI/CT exams,
cardiac catheterization diagnostic procedures and can-
cer radiation treatments through more modern diag-
nostic and treatment equipment.
Possible phone savings
Continued from front page
Enterprises indicates the
municipality can save
$3,196.08 a year on
phone bills by making
some minor changes to its
phone system.
As recommended by
Telcom, South Huron will
save $1,262.88 a year by
switching to Allstream for
its long distance coverage.
The municipality will save
another $1,933.20 annu-
ally by contracting its 32
local business lines
through Bell Telephone.
As payment for the
study, Telcom will get 50
per cent of the savings the
municipality realizes in
the first six months after
making the changes.
Council agreed with the
recommendations.

T -A welcomes new reporter
Starting a new job can
be a positive challenge
and at the same time,
intimidating. As the new
kid on the block, here at
the Times -Advocate, I
feel energized, excited
and just a little anxious.
Why? It's very simple. I
am taking a leap from
broadcast journlism to
print journalism. Since
1990 I have worked in
both radio and television
newsrooms, most recent-
ly at The New PL as the
Weekend News
anchor/reporter. Now I
have the opportunity to
continue my journalism
career by going down a
different path. It will be
a tremendous learning

ence
and I
really
look
forward
t o

great
team at
the T -A. Oh, there is
something else. It is
going to be a pleasure to
have the time and space
to really tell the stories
that matter to you, our
readers. In broadcasting
you always hear, "keep it
short." In print, there's
more room and opportu-
nity to give detailed infor-
mation. I welcome your
story ideas and news
tips. At the same time, I
would really like to hear
about people living in our
community. Do you
know someone who goes
out of their way to help
others? Does your neigh-
bour have an interesting
hobby or bizarre collec-
tion? Is there someone
who deserves recognition
for an outstanding
achievement? Please call
me at 235-1336 X 107 or
send me an e-mail at:

huron.com. If you see
me out and about, please
be sure to introduce
yourself and thanks for
your support!
