EXETER — The Exeter Hawks stumbled slightly last
week in their stretch drive to the playoffs, losing two
games on the road against Lucan and Thamesford,
wrapped around a win Friday night at home over West
Lorne.
Exeter has a 22-13-2-1 record for 47 points, four back
of Lucan and Mt. Brydges who are tied for first in the
conference. Lambeth which also also has 47 points will
be in Exeter Friday night.
Feb. 2 in Lucan, the Hawks threw everything they had
at Lucan goalie Joe Dobbie, but came up short by a 3-2
score.
Exeter coach Derek Macnair said the Hawks played
well enough to win and with a couple of bounces they
might have won.
"We threw everything we had at them, but we can still
play better," said Macnair.
"We're not grabbing at it with the killer instinct. We're
just playing well enough to win. We need to start doing
the simple things better that will win us hockey games."
Macnair pointed out the Hawks held Thamesford
scoreless in the third period with 11 skaters after losing
several players to injuries and fights.
"With 11 skaters we did the simple things and we
have to learn to do it as a team."
Macnair added the Hawks have about four players
carrying the load for the team, "and three of them are
on the same line...the rest of them gotta pull up their
socks and play."
Making his first appearance as an Exeter Hawk was
defenceman Darryl Houston, just acquired from the
Brussel Crusaders and will add some toughness accord-
ing to Macnair.
Lucan took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by
Bob Martin and Trevor Medeiros before Tony Regier cut
the lead in half before the end of the period.
After a scoreless second period, the teams traded
goals in the third.
After Tyler French put Lucan up by two goals early in
the period, Jamie Wolfe replied just under two minutes
later to put the Hawks back within one.
But it was as close as they could get, despite outshoot-
ing Lucan by a 37-25 margin.
Exeter went 0-6 on the power play and allowed one
goal on five Lucan power plays.
Getting assists in the win for Lucan were Jeff McLean
with a pair and singles from Trevor Liddle, Martin,
Brandon Buck and Mark Read.
Dan Moir had two assists in the loss for the Hawks
with singles to Justin LaPorte and Tony Regier.
With West Lorne visiting Friday night, the Hawks
overwhelmed the Lakers with a 50 shot attack and
came away with a 5-2 win.
LaPorte put the Hawks on the board with the lone goal
of the first period before Moir made it a 2-0 lead mid-
way through the second.
But the Hawks needed three more goals in the third to
put the game away, as the Lakers netted a pair to try a
get back in the game.
Goals by Justin Knee, Jason Stuckless, and Jeff Smale
put the game away for Exeter with both teams going 0-5
on the power play.
Joe Nesbitt had a pair of assists, with singles to Tim
Bilcke, Stuckless, LaPorte, Justin Young, Jeff Ackersville
and Larry Northover.
Saturday night in Thamesford, the Hawks again out -
shot their opponents but this time came out on the short
end of a 6-2 final.
The Trojans built an early 2-0 lead in the first before
Knee put the Hawks on the board unassisted.
But four goals in the second period by Thamesford put
9 1 1' 1 1. 1

With the Hawks looking like they will finish in third,
Macnair said the team could still finish the regular sea-

Junior girls team plays
strongly at tourney
GODERICH - The junior girls volleyball team again
had a very strong showing at a tournament in
Goderich recently.
The Panthers found themselves in a tough pool and
had to play well every game as only two teams made
it to the playoff round.
South Huron defeated Kincardine, Wiarton and
Saugeen two straight, lost two to Rockway and split
with Medway. In the last league game, the Panthers
had to win two straight to go on to the semis which
they did by scores of 25-14 and 25-16.
Heading into the semi fmals, the team met a strong
squad from Walkerton winning the first game but
came up short the next two.
The whole team played competitively with strong
setting by Breanna Thompson and Bryn Price. With
only two setters for the day, Thompson and Price
should be commended for their skill and stamina.
Melissa Smith, Caitlin Gaiser, Bryn Price and
Breanna Thompson were strong in the serving posi-
tion. Tristen Caldwell and Ashley Bedard played
strongly at the net blocking shots with Missy Pertschy
showing strong spiking abilities in the power position.
Lindsay Jayne Hayter, Natalie Hayes and Kristyn
Van Elswyk displayed great movement on the court
with smart shots to gain points.
The Panthers head to Stratford this Thursday for
their last league game.
