16 Exeter Times -Advocate Wednesday, February 9, 2005 $104,000 worth of property recovered in last three months HURON — In late 2004, Huron OPP established a property crimes unit to deal with the growing number of crimes involving property in our com- munities in Huron County. The unit started in September but took a month to get everything set up for the new two-man unit. The unit in the last three months has cleared 18 cases, charged 24 people and recovered $104,000 worth of property. Many hours of checking the leads in each case were clarified. Assistance was provided by larger city forces in the area like London, Hamilton, Waterloo Regional and Stratford. Locally, there was a follow- up to a daylight break-in in Huron Park. In this break-in, jewelry, Canadian/American cash, credit cards, liquor, stereo equipment and a camera were stolen. The stolen credit card was used several times by the thieves and many hours were needed to check every location and find video evidence. Later in October one person was caught and a warrant has been issued for another person's arrest. Charged was a 27 -year-old South Huron woman for possession of property obtained by crime and possession, use and traffic credit card. A warrant of arrest has been issued for a 34 -year-old Holyrood area man for break, enter and theft, fraud under $5,000, and theft of credit cards. Officers then became involved in a case involving threats of violence late in October in which a male threatened a young female over the phone of physical harm. The next day while the young woman was inside an educational establishment she was attacked by another woman and assault- ed. As a result, a 22 -year-old Lucan Biddulph man was charged with assault and uttering threats, while a 16 -year-old female youth offender from South Huron was charged with assault. Later in November the team followed up on another daylight break-in to a residence near Huron Park. The break-in took place in the morn- ing of Oct. 21. Three people were seen in the dri- veway of the home loading items into a vehicle. The owner, who was away, later that day reported electronics, computer, games and a television stolen from the residence. Three people have been charged over the day- light break-in: a 17 -year-old female youth offend- er from Cambridge with break, enter and theft and possession of property obtained by crime, along with a 20 -year-old Cambridge man with the same offences, and another 23 -year-old Cambridge man with break, enter and theft. The two-man unit then cleared up a break-in to Greencare Nursery and Landscaping in Exeter. In mid November, a shed on the property was entered sometime through the night and DeWalt power tools were stolen. In mid-December two people were arrested for the break-in: an 18 -year- old Grand Bend man was charged with break, enter and theft and possession of stolen property, while a 15 -year-old male youth offender from South Huron was charged with the same offences. Additional charges against these two males were then laid by other police agencies.
