EXETER — Teenagers today are faced with many
issues involved with weight management.
This can put them at risk for many medical problems,
including diabetes, high blood pressure, high choles-
terol and sleeping disorders.
In our society, we seem to value people with perfect
bodies. Trim and thin people are in ads, on TV and in
fashion magazines, which is where models wear the
newest fashion trends, says registered nurse Aileen
Knip.
It's no wonder overweight teens feel self-conscious
about their looks. Many overweight teens have been
heavy since childhood. Many have learned to cope with
the teasing by staying out of social situations like
dances, clubs or parties. While some people are just
big -boned, others are heavy because they do not eat
properly and rarely exercise. In Canada, as many as
one in every 10 child/youth suffers from a weight issue,
according to Stats Canada (www.statcan.ca).
There are two main types of eating disorders that
might be common in a teenager's life today Bulimia is
an eating disorder in which a person repeatedly binges
on food and then uses self-induced vomiting or laxa-
tives to prevent weight gain. An estimated one per cent
to four per cent of youth will suffer from bulimia in
their lifetime, says Health Canada (www.hc-sc.gc.ca).
The second eating disorder is anorexia, which is
when a person has an intense fear of being fat. When a
person has anorexia, he or she hardly eats at all. A
person with anorexia may weigh food before eating it
or compulsively count the calories of everything. An
estimated 3.5 percent of youths will suffer from
anorexia in their lifetime, says Health Canada
(www.hc-sc.gc.ca). Here are some warning signs if
your teen has an eating disorder:
Anorexia
• Drops weight to about 20 per cent below normal;
• Denies feeling hungry;
POLICE BRIEF
Signs damaged
HURON — During the month of November several
large road signs belonging to ROAD WATCH and
Crime Stoppers were damaged throughout Huron
County.
The six signs were among numerous road signs
erected by the two non-profit groups in Huron
County in an effort to raise awareness for their pro-
grams.
The signs were obtained through government
grants and erected by the two groups as part of their
continual battle in the fight against crime on our
roads and to our property. Huron OPP are asking for
the public's assistance in solving these crimes.
If you have any information about thses crimes,
call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

No one is really sure what causes eating disorders,
although there are many theories why people develop
them. Most people who develop an eating disorder are
between the ages of 14 and 18. Whatever the cause of
an eating disorder, the effects can be damaging. People
who weigh at least 15 per cent less than the normal
weight for their height may not have enough body fat
to keep their organs and other body parts healthy.
Many other health issues can develop from eating dis-
orders, says Knip.
In order for teenagers to have a reflection of healthy
body weight they need to have a healthy self-esteem.
Also of importance is the knowledge of healthy eating
practices. Some of these practices are:
• Meals spaced four to six hours apart;
• Fast foods (KFC, McDonald's, and Dairy Queen)
should be a once in awhile treat;
• Exercise four to five times a week for at least 30-45
minutes;
