Mothers retiring after 34 years

EXETER — After 34
years in business in
Exeter, Jerry Mathers is
looking forward to some
time to relax.
Mathers is retiring Feb.
18, and his Main Street
business, Jerry Mathers
Typewriters will change
ownership and become
South Huron Office
Solutions. Rose Glavin
and Mike Pullman will be
the new owners.
Mathers opened his
business in February
1971, originally starting
out only on the service
end of things, repairing
typewriters, cash regis-
ters and calculators. After
a couple of years, he
moved into the retail
aspect of the business and
started selling machines,
stationary and furniture,
until retail became the
biggest part of his busi-
ness. Nowadays, Mathers
says there isn't much ser-
vice work on machines
due to a "throwaway soci-
ety."
Before opening in 1971,
Mathers had been doing
service work with
Remington Rand and later
worked for London Life.
Mathers has been think-
ing of retiring for about a
year and, while he admits
he isn't a big traveller,
he's looking forward to
seeing the east and west
coasts of Canada.
In the meantime,
Mathers and his wife
Phyllis have been busy
preparing for the closing.
They will remain in
Exeter.
After 34 years in business on Exeter's Main Street, Jerry Mathers is retiring Feb
18. Jerry Mathers Typewriters will remain open under a new name, South Huron
Office Solutions. New owners Rose Glavin and Mike Pullman will re -open Feb. 21.

Mathers says he's happy
the business will carry on
with local ownership.
"That makes it a lot eas-
ier to walk away," he
says, adding the business
will stay the same,
although the service work
will no longer be offered.
Mathers thanks his fam-
ily, his customers and the
Exeter community for
supporting him.
"Ninety per cent of the
people who walk in the
front door (I) know by
name," he says, adding he
considers most of his cus-
tomers as friends.
Mathers said he wishes
the new owners of South
Huron Office Solutions
luck and hopes his loyal
customers will continue to
Kirkton dairy meeting
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
KIRKTON — 'Milk pro-
duction efficiency' was
one of the terms dairy
producers heard at the
Kirkton Veterinary Clinic
Dairy Producers meeting
Feb. 2 in Kirkton.
Speaking at the meeting
was Randy Bagg, Senior
Scientist with Elanco
Animal Health.
Bagg gave a presenta-
tion on the use and bene-
fits of Rumensin CRC and
said milk production effi-
ciency (MPE) is a relative-
ly new term and can be
increased by using
rumensin.
It can be given either by
controlled release cap-
sules (CRC) or by
Rumensin premix in feed.
Production efficiency
means getting more out of
the feed that is going in
and is described as kilo-
grams of milk yield per
kilogram of dry matter
intake fed.
Among the benefits of
using Rumensin, accord-
ing to Bagg are reduced
risk of clinical and sub-
clinical ketosis; reduced
risk of displaced aboma-
sum and retained placen-
ta.
Asked if both Rumensin
Premix and Rumensin
CRC could be used at the
same time, Bagg said it
was an extra label use
and would have to be
authorized by a vet.
Bagg added that rations
were just one of the fac-
tors involved in a dairy
program.
"Management is more
important than what is
fed."

"We'll work for your Business!"
support the business.
Mathers has seen a lot
of changes in business
over the years. He says he
always had to stay on top
of market trends. He
remembers seeing a
demonstration of the first
IBM electric typewriter.
Mathers says he will
definitely miss the work,
but he is also looking for-
ward to retirement.
"There are so many
things I've wanted to do
that I just haven't been
able to."
South Huron Office
Solutions will open Feb.
21.
POLICE BRIEF
Huron
Centennial
vandalized
BLUEWATER — On
Jan. 28 at 9:45 p.m., the
Brucefield Fire
Department called OPP
to Huron Centennial
Public School on
Centennial Road.
The officer learned
someone that night had
smashed a door window
at the school, entered
the hallway and pulled
the fire alarm. This is
the second time this has
been done. Damage to
the window is $500, but
the cost of the firemen
to the Bluewater
Municipality and tax-
payers is at least twice
that amount. If you
know something about
this, pick up the phone
and call the Huron OPP
or Crimestoppers.
