Exeter Jr. 'D' Hawks double Thamesford 6-3
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — The Exeter
Hawks had two penalty
shots on the weekend,
and were shutout for the
first time in the regular
season in four years.
The Hawks split their
games, getting blanked
Friday night by West
Lorne 3-0 before
rebounding for a 6-3 win
over Thamesford Sunday
night in Exeter.
The Hawks were last
shutout in the regular
season by Thamesford
Dec. 15, 2000.
The action leaves the
Hawks with a 21-11-2-1
record for 45 points, two
back of Lucan for first in
the conference.
Both teams have played
35 games and first place
will be on the line tonight
(Wednesday) when
Exeter visits Lucan.
In a scoreless first peri-
od, the Hawks had a
chance to open the scor-
ing when a penalty shot
was awarded for a West
Lorne player putting a
hand on the puck in the
crease.
Chad Deman took the
shot for Exeter but could-
n't beat goalie Brandon
Palmer who was razor
sharp throughout the
game, stopping all 55
shots he faced.
The Lakers got on the
board late in the period,
and added another early
in the third before sealing
the win with an empty
net goal for the 3-0 win.
The Hawks went 0-4
with the man -advantage
while killing off all seven
Lakers power plays.
Exeter coach Derek
Macnair said it was a
tough game to lose, with
the way the Hawks out -
shot the Lakers.
"You outshoot a team
by that margin and only
give up two goals, you
expect to win the
game...we didn't have
enough traffic in front of
him. We have him again
next Friday so we'll see if
he can put back-to-back
games together like that."
But Macnair said he
was happy with the way
the Hawks played, but
they just couldn't score.
The visitors were first
on the board Sunday
night, scoring the only
goal of the first period a
Gold and silver medals
for Synchro teams
LEAMINGTON — Three of Exeter's
four synchronized teams travelled to
Leamington on the weekend and
returned with a gold by the Exeter
Classics and a silver by the Classiques.
In flight one, the Exeter Classic team
ended up fourth taking them to the sil-
ver fmal.
In flight two the other Adult team
skated well to place fourth, taking them
to the silver medal final as well.
There were 13 adult teams from
across Ontario competing and 112
teams all together in the different cate-
gories.
The two Exeter adult teams ended up
skating against each other in the fmal
and brought back the gold and silver
medals.
Coach Kathy McLlwain said it was
great seeing all the skaters up on the
podium together.
The Masters team did not conquer the
podium in this competition.
The teams were a little tougher and
Exeter ended fifth.
The synchronized skaters will have
their showcase Feb. 6 from 6 p.m. until
7 p.m. at the Rec Centre in Exeter.
All four Exeter teams will head to
Peterborough in two weeks to try to
qualify for the Canadian Championships
in Sarnia at the end of March.
McElwain said the door is open for the
Juniors and Adults, but it is tough com-
petition and they will need to be on top
and focused with flawless programs.
"The opportunity is there and we are
going for it," said McLlwain.

lead they held until 13:26
of the second period
when Justin LaPorte tied
it.
Five minutes later the
Hawks were ahead on a
marker by Josh Liddle
but Thamesford tied it
before the period was
over.
The Hawks were
awarded another penalty
shot for a Thamesford
player lying on the puck
in the crease.
Justin Young made no
mistake, putting the
Hawks ahead again 3-2.
The Trojans tied it once
again in the third but
three straight goals by
the Hawks put the game
away by Matt Vlemmix,
Justin Knee and a short-
handed empty net goal by
Jason Stuckless.
The Hawks outshot the
Trojans 47-27 and went
0-2 on the power play,
killing off three
Thamesford man -advan-
tages.
With the slow start the
Hawks had, Macnair said
the team was completely
different from the way it
played Friday night com-
pared to the early part of
Sunday's game.
"We didn't do the things
we did Friday night... but
we came back in the next
two periods and we were
fine."
The Hawks have two
other games this week
other than the Lucan
game, with West Lorne
back in town Friday night
at 8:30 p.m.
They visit Thamesford
Feb. 5 at 8:30 p.m.
With the playoffs fast
approaching, Macnair
said if the Hawks weren't
motivated for the game
against Lucan, "we don't
deserve to be there."
It will be Exeter Public
school night at the Rec
Centre and the Hawks
elimination draw will be
held Feb. 11 at the Rec
Centre.
Tickets are available
from any Hawk player,
parent or board member.

Empty net goal for goalie
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — South
Huron Major Midget
goalie Corey Bilcke led
his team offensively and
defensively Saturday
against Forest,
stopping every-
thing he faced for
a 3-0 shutout
before adding a
goal of his own
into the empty
Forest net.
Bilcke said the
play came off a
draw just outside
the South Huron
blueline, and it
came back to him
at the faceoff circle.
With a six on three
advantage for Forest,
Bilcke said he only had
about three feet to get the
puck through.
"I watched it travel
down there and it's prob-
ably the greatest feeling I
ever had though."
Bilcke, who used to play
out, said he regularly
plays the puck and knew
what he was doing when
he shot the puck.
"I wasn't trying to pass
it, I kind of aimed in my
head, aimed and shot."
It was the first empty
net goal for Bilcke, who
said he had been trying
for it all year.
"I've actually just been
trying to get an assist, but
this is a lot better."
As soon as the goal
scored, Bilcke said the
bench and the crowd
went wild.
"They congrat-
ulated me, I got
the puck of the
game and the
coaches from the
other team came
down and shook
my hand."
South Huron
will be at home
to face Forest
tonight
(Wednesday) at 9
p.m. before a 7 p.m.
game in Mt. Brydges Feb.
6.
South Huron lost its
first game to Mt. Brydges
Jan. 26 by a 6-4 score.
