LUCAN — The Lucan Merton Jets
finished their regular season on a
winning note with a 6-4 win over
Monkton Jan. 29 in Lucan.
Jets general manager Rob
Andrews said the team will be open-
ing the playoffs Friday night at
home against Durham at 8:30 p.m.
"I'm 99 per cent sure we're start-
ing Friday night ," said Andrews.
The next home game for the Jets
will be Feb. 12 in the best three -of -
five series.
The Jets will be in Durham Feb.
11.
The win gives the Jets a 15-5-2-3
record for 35 points and puts them
in a tie with Tavistock and
Palmerston as of Jan. 30.
Elora holds down first with 39
points while Hensall has 38 and
Clinton and Shelburne are tied with
37 points.
Saturday night the Jets built a 5-1
lead before hanging on for the 6-4
win.
Lucan/Ilderton was paced by three
goals from Matt Monroe and singles
from Ben Dobbie, Brady Kjeldgaard
and an empty net marker from
Shaun Fairweather to seal the win.
Dave Riddell picked up the win in
net for the Jets.
Andrews added he was happy
with the way the first season has
gone for the Jets.
"I can't have foreseen any better
finish. When nine points separate 10
teams that is a pretty good league.
and I think we've gained some
respect from a lot of the
teams We're going to be happy no
matter what happens."
The Jets also will be going into the
playoffs with their leading scorer
possibly back in the lineup.
Todd Hunt is close to recovering
from an upper body injury and may
be ready for the playoffs.
Although Andrews said the Jets
would be in tough against defending
champion Durham, "you have to go
through everybody to win it all any-
way...why not start with the best?"

HENSALL — Four goals
in the third period sal-
vaged an important point
for the Hensall Sherwoods
Saturday night in Hensall.
They now wait for their
first round opponent to be
decided.
After a 6-5 loss in
Milverton Friday night, the
Sherwoods were down 3-0
going into the third period
against the Monkton
Wildcats.
But four goals from Jeff
Finkbeiner, Jeremy
Geoffrey, Chris Downey
and Sean McCann rallied
the Sherwoods to a 4-4 tie.
Getting assists in the tie
were Adam McCann,
Jared Bourne, Jarrett
Jeffrey, Sean McCann,
Andy Glavin, Chris
Kennedy and Chris
Downey.
Hensall finishes the reg-
ular season with a 17-4-3-
1 record for 38 points.

points while Clinton and
Shelburne are tied with 37
points.
Tavistock, Palmerston
and Lucan are tied with
35 points with Tavistock
and Palmerston each hav-
ing one remaining game.
Hensall coach Jason
McBride said the
Sherwoods might be play-
ing either Monkton or
Mildmay, but while noth-
ing was certain yet they
would probably open the
playoffs at home the week-
end of Feb. 12.
In his first year as coach
of the Sherwoods, McBride
said team veterans said
they have never seen the
league as close as it is
now.
Going into the playoffs,
McBride said the
Sherwoods are healthy
overall. "Hopefully we can
continue that trend."
SH junior girls volleyball team wins tourney
DORCHESTER - The junior girls volleyball team were
`A' championship winners at the Dorchester tourney
recently. After losing the first game of the day to
Strathroy, the Panthers stayed on the winning side for
the rest of the tourney defeating Strathroy in the second
game and Dorchester and CDI two games straight each.
The girls met Huron Park from Woodstock in the semi
finals and again took their opponent two straight 26-24
and 25-4. In the second game of the semi-finals Melissa
Smith served 20 straight serves to notch the win.
In the 'A' final, South Huron again met the strong
Strathroy team and took the team two games straight
25-18 and 25-19. The team of Breanna Thompson,
Melissa Smith, Ashley Bedard, Chantal Yearley, Missy
Pertschy and Tristen Caldwell were unstoppable in the
final games with Breanna Thompson and Missy
Pertschy leading their team in serves, Tristen Caldwell
and Melissa Smith pounding the ball with big blocks
from Ashley Bedard and smart tips from Chantal
Yearley. Thompson and Yearley played superbly in the
setting position for the whole tourney.
Caitlin Gaiser, Kristyn Van Elswyk, Natalie Hayes and
Jaime Glazier were strong defensively and offensively
throughout the tourney while Gaiser should be com-
mended for her exceptional serving prowess.

Gillespie takes
over as Majors gm
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE
LONDON — Zurich
native Shawn Gillespie is
working to get ready for
the new season in his new
position as general man-
ager of the London Majors
of the Intercounty
Baseball League (IBL)
under owner Scott Dart.
In a press release, Dart
said, "I'm excited
to be working
with Shawn as
our new GM.
Shawn has an
insider's knowl-
edge of baseball
through his vast
experience along
with an estab-
lished base of
to down play that aspect. I
fully intend to play but my
primary focus is putting a
team together."
As finalists in the 2004
season, Gillespie said the
team has a solid core to
build on.
"They had a good
offence last year, and
were just a little short on
pitching...pitching really
needs to focused on. A
number of pitch-
ers need to be
brought in."
Gillespie said
with pitching and
defence able to
control 90 per
cent of the out-
come of the game,
they would be
keys to the way
contacts to Shawn
improve our ros-
ter. He will help make the
Majors a success on the
field and a team that the
community can be proud
to support."
After having surgery on
his shoulder at the end of
the 2003 season, Gillespie
was hoping to come back
last year, but said it didn't
go as he hoped, "and real-
ity kicked in."
Knowing the Majors
were looking for a general
manager, and thinking
about moving back up to
Canada, Gillespie applied
for the job and was hired.
In the job only a few
weeks, his focus is on hir-
ing a manager and coach-
es, as well as filling out
the roster.
"I have been working
away trying to get the
guys from last year to
come back and I'm always
working on new guys
coming in. It's an ongoing
process and I'm also try-
ing to secure sponsorships
for the team."
With his arm much bet-
ter than it was Gillespie
said he feels he can come
back and play again,
"I'll probably be one of
the key players, but I want

2nd high Ray Rader

2nd solo Betty Coates,

Gillespie he wanted to
build the team.
"The game really comes
down to who has the bet-
ter starting pitching. If you
can put out three starting
pitchers who are all solid,
above average guys that
will go a long way in the
league."
For the manager's posi-
tion, Gillespie said the
team was still looking and
hoping someone from the
area who is qualified will
come forward.
"We're going to take our
time and make a good
decision."
