But the Avon Maitland District School Board's Human Resources super- intendent, Jim Sheppard, is confident that — even if Huron and Perth county teachers vote in favour — a contract will be finalized before any further labour action is launched. "I think the positive sign here is that, even though we're at what's called the conciliation stage, we're still talking," Sheppard said after a regular board meeting Jan. 25. "The parties are com- mitted to continuing dis- cussions." As is the case in most school boards across the province, the previous one-year contracts for both Avon Maitland's ele- mentary and secondary teachers concluded Aug. 31, 2004. In recent years, due largely to a lack of long-term funding com- mitments from the Education Ministry, one- year deals have been the norm, and they typically are written and agreed upon some months after the conclusion of the pre- vious contracts. Since the beginning of 2005, most local ETFO chapters have voted to place themselves in legal strike positions, and a sim- ilar outcome is expected in Huron and Perth counties. No Ontario elementary teachers have yet opted to strike, but few have reached agreements with their boards. Sheppard is optimistic about chances for a reso- lution in the Avon Maitland board, stating both sides have welcomed an independent conciliator and have booked negotia- tion dates after the early February legal strike posi- tion vote. He adds he's hopeful"a breakthrough" is possible, especially if the SH Midgets' money stolen FOREST — The South Huron Major Midgets celebra- tion was cut short after their 3-0 win in Forest Saturday night. After returning to their dressing room, the team dis- covered around $300 had been taken from wallets of players during the game. Coach Darren Kints said police were called, but it hadn't been determined how access was gained to the dressing room. Other than cash nothing else was stolen, but around half the team lost money according to Kints. "One of those things to end off a good night on the wrong way," said Kints. Tom Barker, president of District 8 of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF), shares a similar hope when it comes to negotiations for a new high school teachers con- tract. Barker, speaking after the recent Avon Maitland meeting, reported the District 8 local just passed a "resumption of negotia- tions" motion, allowing for a provincial OSSTF representative to take part in talks with the board. He admitted that "progress has been pretty slow," and that what's really needed is "some movement at the provincial level." Examples include reso- lution of certain funding commitments, and clarifi- cation about whether the ruling Liberals will alter some of the teacher work- load legislation brought ht by the previous Conservative government. Tanya Allen of Crediton, left, was the lucky winner of a private suite seating 14 people for Sunday's London Knights game against the Kingston Frontenacs at the John Labatt Centre.Allen won the tickets in the recent Hensall Sherwoods fundraising draw, which saw 300 tickets sold.
