CNIB holds fundraiser
EXETER — The
Canadian National
Institute for the Blind
(CNIB) is holding its
Focus on Crocus
fundraiser this week.
CNIB board member
and volunteer Gordon
Hill said the CNIB will
have a display set up at
Hansen's Independent
Grocer Thursday (Feb. 3)
starting at 10 a.m. and
continuing until 3-4 p.m.
Focus on Crocus is a
major fundraiser for the
CNIB. Crocus pots cost $4
each or $10 for three
pots. Money raised is
used locally and to pro-
vide service to CNIB
clients.
Hill said the CNIB has
19 clients in the Exeter
area. The CNIB serves
clients who are partially
blind, blind or deafblind.
Clients are assisted with
cooking, shopping, bank-
ing and with using a
white cane. Counselling
sessions are also made
with the clients' family
members. The CNIB also
helps with career devel-
opment.
For a cost, the CNIB
also provides technical
aids to clients.
Created in 1918, the
following are some facts
provided by the CNIB:
• The Ontario division
of the CNIB serves nearly
50,000 clients, nearly
half the Canadian client
population. That number
is expected to double
within the next decade.
• The CNIB serves all
age groups, including
children, working -age
adults and seniors.
• By age 65, one in nine
Canadians will experi-
ence some form of vision
loss that can't be correct-
ed, a figure that increas-
es to one in four by age
80.
• The CNIB has 1,000
staffers and 20,000 vol-
unteers in 53 offices
across Canada.
• The CNIB Library cir-
culated 1 8 million items
in 2002, or 5,000 items
per day. Services include
talking books, braille
books, electronic books,
braille music and
descriptive videos.
• The CNIB has a
national operating bud-
get of $77 million.

Local welding course offered
CLINTON — Space is
running out on a local
welding course designed
to offer some tech train-
ing not available in the
county.
The beginners' course
in welding runs Feb. 7 to
March 1 at Central
Huron Secondary School
in Clinton. Run in con-
junction with the Huron
Manufacturer's
Association (HMA), the
Avon Maitland District
School Board and
Fanshawe College, the
course is filling up fast.
Committee member
Jim Muir, a tech teacher
and guidance counsellor
at Central Huron, said
students will learn weld-
ing theory, arc welding,
MIG welding and how to
perform different welds.
The course costs $431,
including taxes, material
and the textbook.
Classes will run 5-10
p.m., Monday to
Thursday.
After the welding
course ends, the
involved groups hope to
offer a fabrication
course where students
will learn things such as
bending metals and
making projects.
The welding course is a
precursor to a manufac-
turing techniques course
the HMA, school board
and Fanshawe want to
offer next fall. That pro-
gram will include
machine shop and weld-
ing. Those who have
already taken the weld-
ing and fabrication
courses won't have to
take those components
of the techniques course,
Muir said.
Muir said the courses
are an effort to make
tech training available
locally. Once that was
decided, a location was
needed and Central
Huron was chosen.
Anyone interested in
the welding course
should call Muir as soon
as possible at 482-3471,
ext. 165.
