Fire destroys pub

GRAND BEND — Fire destroyed the
19th Hole Pub and Grill at the Oakwood
Inn in Grand Bend early Jan. 20, com-
pletely destroying the building which was
to reopen last week.
The fire began just after
midnight and was responded
to by the Grand Bend and
Dashwood fire departments,
but they were unable to save
the building, remaining on the
scene until 7 a.m.
Owner Dave Scatcherd said
the rebuilding would start as
soon as possible.
"We'll start drawing up plans for the
new place and get the insurance people
in there...We want to have something up
before May 24."
Estimates of the damaged are around
$800,000, according to Scatcherd, but
$100,000 worth of memorabilia
destroyed in the fire is irreplaceable.
Items destroyed in the fire included
signed photos of the Chicago Black
IIawks and photos of Scatcherd with Lee
Trevino and Arnold Palmer.
"There is nothing left, not a thing...I
don't even want to go in
there."
The pub was one of the
Inn's first buildings when it
was built in the 1920s and
was renovated in 2002.
There was no damage to
the rest of the resort and it
remains open for business.
Don Shropshall from the
Huron OPP said the Fire Marshall still has
to fmalize the cause of the fire but it is
believed to be accidental.
Shropshall said the Fire Marshall con-
cluded the fire took place in the bar area
inside the building.
"There is nothing
left, not a thing...I
don't even want to
go in there"
