Pinder looking forward to spring season
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Exeter golfer
Karly Pinder gained a lot
of experience in her first
term at Iowa State
University and is looking
forward to the spring golf
season.
Pinder is a business
major on a four-year pro-
gram on a golf scholarship
at the university.
She said while it was a
little overwhelming at the
start of the year, every-
thing has settled down
and improved overall.
Pinder said the school of
32,000 has a strong golf
team which includes
senior players who will be
on the Ladies Professional
Golf Association (LPGA)
tour in a few years.
The team is made up of
nine players with five
going to each tournament.
Team members have to
qualify for each tourna-
ment and Pinder qualified
for three of five in the fall
term.
With the level of players
on the team she said it
was important to focus
and one or two strokes
could be the difference to
qualifying.
The three tournaments
she qualified for were in
Kansas, Denver and
Arkansas, with her best
score in Denver where she
was 31st out of 100 play-
ers.
In the spring the team
will be travelling to tour-
naments in Miami,
Arizona, Indiana, Texas
and Las Vegas.
The team had one of its
best seasons in eight years
and Pinder said it was
exciting to be in a good
program.
"There's a lot of momen-
tum."
One of the differences in
university play, according
to Pinder, is coaches can
talk to the players during
matches and stay with
them for a few holes
which helps to overcome
any nervousness.
One of the advantages of
a big school like Iowa
State is the amount of
money available for the
program.
According to Pinder, the
school "goes to every
effort," with specialists in
every area available such
as sports psychologists
and conditioning.
Academics are also
emphasized with constant
communication between
coaches and teachers.
Tutors are available if
needed and each fresh-
man has monitored hours
of study time to put in.
Pinder has focused on
her short game and said
she has learned a lot from
the coaches and other
players on the team.
"They've been very sup-
portive."
When the school year
finishes in mid May,
Pinder will be coming
Outdoor soccer registration coming
EXETER — Outdoor soccer registra-
tion is being held one month earlier
than normal this year.
The dates are Jan. 29 from 9 a.m until
noon and Jan. 31 from 7 p.m. until 9
p.m.
Both dates will be held at the South
Huron Rec Centre.
The leagues which the club plays in
have their registrations in mid February
and the club wants to make sure they
are providing all their members with
the appropriate level of play.
The cost this year is $65 for a child
born in 2000 and 2001 and $80 for all
other age groups.
The last date to register is Feb. 14.
After that date there will be a late fee of
$20 per player excluding children born
in 200 and 2001.
