Major Atom Lakers
meet Walter Gretz
BRANTFORD — The Major Atom Lakers were
amazed when Walter Gretzky walked into their
change room preceding their game against the
Brantford 99ers, Jan. 9.
Hugo Maaskant, a laker parent, arranged this once
in a lifetime experience.
Walter spent the better part of an hour answering
the kids questions, having his picture taken, and sign-
ing memorabilia.
Gretzky's pre -game talk spoke to the importance of
passing the puck, short shifts and always listening to
your coach.
He was sure to make the kids aware of how great an
opportunity they have, being able to play such a great
game and reminded the kids to thank their parents
often.
The kids were very receptive and appreciative of
Walters wisdom, but fell short of his request to let the
Brantford 99ers win the game, and preceded to tromp
them 6-0.
Jeff Campbell ECHL all-star
By Pat Bolen Constitution, said
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF Campbell, although he is
only 5'9" and 170 pounds,
uses his intelligence to
make up for his lack of
size.
"Soupy is one of the
most intelligent players
I've ever coached," said
Pyle.
"I don't know of a rookie
in the league who's play-
ing any better."
The Gladiators are in
third in the South Division
of the American
Conference, with an 18-
10-4 record for 40 points.
They are three back of
first place Pensacola and
one back of Florida.
GWINNETT — Former
Exeter Hawk Jeff
Campbell was one of three
Gwinnett Gladiators
selected for the all-star
game of the East Coast
Hockey League Jan. 26 in
Reading Pa.
Campbell is fifth in rook-
ie scoring scoring with 27
points in 29 games this
season and his 13 goals
rank second on the
Gladiators.
He is on a call-up to St.
John's of the AHL in his
first year with the team
after coming out of
Western Michigan
University.
Quoted in the Gwinnet
Daily Post, Campbell said
"First, it's a great honour
to be selected. Especially
from our team, we have
so many guys having
great season this year, to
be selected as one of the
three guys is a pretty good
honour.
"It's obviously a great
opportunity for me and
Jimmy (Jackson) and
Brett (Engelhardt) to go
up there and showcase
our skills. And showcase
our team skills too,
because we're represent-
ing the Gladiators also
while we're there."
The starting lineups for
the game were deter-
mined in voting by confer-
ence coaches, team cap-
tains, media relation
directors, broadcasters
and newspaper writers.
