Exeter Jr. D Hawks hit stride with two wins
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — The Exeter
Hawks took four points on
the weekend with a pair of
wins to improve their
record to 19-10-2-1 for 41
points, two back of confer-
ence leading Lucan.
The Hawks needed three
third -period goals Friday
night in Exeter for a 3-1
win over Mitchell before a
5-2 win in North
Middlesex Sunday.
Although happy with the
two wins the Hawks
picked up, Exeter coach
Derek Macnair said the
Hawks could have played
more physically in both
games, especially against
the Stars.
"They seemed to take it
to us physically, fortunate-
ly we jumped out to a lead
and held onto it. I'd like to
see us play more physical
and finish our checks on a
game by game and shift
by shift basis. And that's
just not happening right
now," said Macnair.
Friday night neither
team was able to generate
many scoring chances in
the first period with Justin
Young getting the best
chance early.
Young took a pass hi the
slot, but was unable to
beat Mitchell goalie
Andrew Daub, who made
a point blank goal save.
The game remained
scoreless until late in the
second when Mitchell was
first on the board.
Coming in on a two -on -
one, Steve Henderson
ripped a wrist shot from
the faceoff circle past
Exeter goalie Cam Becker
for a 1-0 lead.
Exeter came out strong
in the third period work-
ing a power play and took
advantage quickly with
Jamie Wolfe's low shot
from the blueline beating
Daub.
Midway through the
period, Nathan Regier put
Exeter in front to stay,
backhanding a shot over
Daub.
Mitchell pressed for the
tying goal in the last min-
utes but Beckers glove
save with two minutes left
kept it a 2-1 game before
Scott Davies sealed the
win with an empty net
goal.
Picking up assists in the
win were Regier, Tim
Bilcke and Joe Nesbitt.
The Hawks never trailed
Sunday with a pair of
goals in the first and two
more in the second on the
way to a 5-2 win.
Regier added another to
open the scoring early
before Jason Stuckless
made it 2-0 with eight sec-
onds left in the period.
Davies gave the Hawks a
3-0 lead just 20 seconds
into the period before
adding another two min-
utes later for a 4-0 lead.
The Stars cut the lead to
4-2 by the middle of the
third period but Justin
Knee capped the scoring
with five minutes left for
the 5-2 win.

Lucan Irish fall short 9-7 against Lakers

LUCAN — The Lucan
Irish split a pair of wide
open games last week,
with an 8-5 win over
North Middlesex in a
makeup game, before los-
ing a 9-7 decision to West
Lorne Wednesday night in
Lucan.
The games leave Lucan
with a 21-11-1-0 record
for 43 points, just two up
on Exeter for first place in
the conference.
Hagersville sits in first
place overall with 50
points.
Lucan opened the scor-
ing early hi the first period
with a power play marker
from Trevor Medeiros at
18:40 but the Lakers
replied just 30 seconds
later to even the score.
The Irish took a 3-1 lead
by the midway marker of
the period on goals from
Trevor Liddle and Steve
Wells.
But again the Lakers
tied it with a pair of power
play goals before the peri-
od was over.
West Lorne took its first
lead of the game early in
the second but it was
Lucan firing a pair of
goals from Liddle and
Aaron Whitcomb for a 5-4
lead.
But the lead only lasted
a couple of minutes as the
Lakers added two goals
before the period was
over for a 6-5 lead.
The visitors extended
their lead to 7-5 midway
through the period, but
Lucan wasn't done yet.
A pair of goals 14 sec-
onds apart from Medeiros
and Mark Read put the
Irish even again at 7-7.
Hawks are starting to hit
their stride at the right
time and are playing well
overall.
"Our goaltending has
been good, we've been
good in our own end, our
defence has been solid,
we're scoring goals and
our penalty kill has been
unbelievable."
The Hawks have one
game this week with
Belmont visiting Friday
night.
Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. the
Hawks will be taking the
South Huron Atom girls in
their annual exhibition
game.
Jan. 28 will be Precious

But a hooking penalty to
Lucan captain Jeff
McLean with three min-
utes left gave West Lorne
its chance.
They made no mistake
with a power play goal for
the winner.
The Lakers sealed the
win with an empty net
goal in the dying seconds.
Lucan has one game this
week with Thamesford
visiting tonight
(Wednesday) at 7:45 p.m.
Sherwoods double Goderich 8-4
HENSALL — The Hensall Sherwoods built a 5-1 lead
over Goderich Saturday night in Hensall, before hang-
ing on for an 8-4 win.
The win gives the Sherwoods a 21-15-4-1 record with
32 points.
Hensall sits in fifth place, two back of league leading
Durham, with Elora, Clinton and Shelburne tied in
between with 33 points.
The Sherwoods took a a 2-0 lead in the first period
against Goderich on a pair of goals from Sean McCann.
They added two more in the second from Jarrett
Jeffrey before Goderich got on the board to make it 4-1.
But Chris McDonald restored the four goal lead before
the period was over.
The teams exchanged goals several times in the third
as Goderich tried to get back in the game but three
more goals from Jeff VanBergen, Jeff Glavin and Jeff
Finkbeiner put the game away for the Sherwoods.
Hensall has two games this weekend starting with a
visit to Clinton Friday night at 8:30 p.m.
Mildmay will be in Hensall Jan. 22 for a 7:30 p.m.
game.
