Community prayer held for tsunami victims
EXETER — As the world continues to
react to the devastating Asian tsunami,
area residents showed their concern last
week in a community prayer service.
The service, held at Presbyterian
Church Jan. 13, was open to the entire
community and included prayers, read-
ings from the Bible, songs and a candle
lighting ceremony. Church member
Carol Ann Keys led the service, while
Lorna Stuart read a chronology of
events in Asia from the time the Dec. 26
tsunami started its destruction. Donna
Webster read from the Bible.
Keys said last week's community
prayer was a chance to pray for the vic-
tims, their families and for those provid-
ing relief.
Latest United Nations counts have the
death toll from the tsunami exceeding
160,000. Sri Lanka, Thailand and
Indonesia were the hardest hit. Nations
around the world have responded with
money, supplies and volunteers. Over $4
billion has been raised so far, with the
Canadian government pledging $425
million with an additional plan to match
the funds raised by the public.
Peter and HelenaToornstra take part in a hymn during the community prayer ser-
vice last week at Caven Presbyterian Church for the victims in the Asian tsunami.
The service was a way for the community to come together and pray for the vic-
tims, their families and those helping with the rebuilding.
