South Huron Rec Centre TIMES -ADVOCATE Exeter, Ontario, Canada Wednesday, January 12, 2005 .25 (includes GST) Fire destroys home By Scott Nixon TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF SOUTH HURON — A fire at the northern boundary of the municipality gutted a home early on Jan. 3. South Huron fire chief John Morgan estimated the damage to the stone home at between $150,000 to $200,000. Owner Brian Miller was taken to South Huron Hospital for smoke inhalation and later released. The Exeter fire station responded to the fire at 41167 Line 17 on the boundary between Usborne and Tuckersmith at 12:03 a.m., Jan. 3. Morgan said the fire was in the kitchen and basement of the home and in a garage at the back when firefight- ers arrived on the scene. Firewood was stored in both the basement and the garage. Firefighters were able to get part of the fire under control in the kitchen, but couldn't control the fire in the basement. "The floor was spongy," Morgan explained, "so you couldn't attack the fire from inside ... there was so much fire going in the basement we couldn't do any- thing with it. We ended up putting a total of about 21,000 gallons of water on it." Morgan said it was fortunate Miller was awoken by smoke alarms in the house. "(Miller) is very thankful for them, because that's the only thing that woke him up, apparently." Once Miller got out of the house, he tried to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher, but was driven back by heavy smoke. Morgan speculated the fire was caused by the home's heating system, although it had been maintained and had new chimney pipes. "It was a really nice old stone house," he added. "The stone walls are still standing but everything else is just gone." The Hensall fire department assisted with the fire because, given the location of the fire, the Hensall sta- tion's response time was quicker than the other South Huron stations, Morgan explained. This stone home on Line 17 in the former Usborne Township was destroyed by fire early Jan. 3. Owner Brian Miller was taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation and later released.
