The Huron United Way edged closer to its fundraising goal of $200,000 for the
year with a donation from Hensall Public School last week. Students participated
in a "Penny Pincher" campaign, and collected $ 192.50, $100 of which went to the
United Way (the rest will go towards a school project).Along with other dona-
tions from the school, including teacher payroll deductions, Hensall Public raised
more than $500 for the United Way. Huron United Way executive director
Kimberley Payne spoke to students Dec. 10, and explained to them the impor-
tance of the United Way and how it funds 13 agencies in the county, including Big
Brothers/Big Sisters, which Payne's son Rick Bilcke, above centre, is a member of.
With Bilcke above are D.J. Russell, left, whose Grade 8 class raised the most
money in the school ($45.46), and Payne. Between schools in the Avon Maitland
District School Board and the Huron -Perth Catholic District School Board, over
$25,000 was raised for the United Way.As of last week, the United Way had
reached 90 per cent of its fundraising goal. (photo/Scott Nixon)

The True
Meaning of
Christmas
Megan Schade
Grade 5
Zurich Public School
The true meaning of
Christmas is not about
getting gifts but we all
know that we love getting
gifts. It's about giving to
friends and family your
love, kindness and joy.
Its also about learning
about the baby Jesus and
how God is His father. It is
very special to me
because I was born five
days before Christmas.
Also that He came to
earth to die for our sins.
Every year my family goes
to church on Christmas
Eve.
In the morning, Katelyn
and I open our stockings.
Then we all open pre-
sents. Then we go to our
grandma and grandpa
Schade's for Christmas
supper. Our two cousins
come too. We all get
spoiled. I love them. We
all give love to each other.
And that is the true mean-
ing of Christmas.

LETTERS TO SANTA
Dear Santa,
My name is Ally and I was
wondering what you did on
your vacation? I had fun
with my family at
Marineland. Santa I tried
very hard to be good, but
sometimes my ears weren't
working too well. My mom
says maybe I should ask for a new set for
Christmas. Santa I think they work just fine so I
would like your elves to make me a fairy Barbie,
Barbie Computer and the elefun game. Thank you
Santa, I will be sure to leave you and the reindeer a
snack when you visit. Love,
