By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN — The Lucan
Ilderton Jets had a tough
weekend with a 12-4 loss
in Elora Dec. 17 before
returning home for a
hard fought 5-5 tie
against Tavistock
Saturday night.
The Jets now have 28
points and are tied with
the Hensall Sherwoods
for second place, one
point behind Shelburne,
Clinton and Durham
which are locked in a tie
for first.
After starting the Elora
with just over three lines,
the Jets lost more players
to injuries during the
game, reducing them to
two lines.
Against Tavistock, the
Jets were down 4-2
before coming back to
take the lead but couldn't
hold on for the win.
Jets general Manager
Rob Andrews said the
team will be missing Todd
Hunt, its leading scorer,
until sometime after
Christmas.
The Jets also had their
second leading scorer,
Craig Black hurt Friday
night and was not in the
lineup against Tavistock.
The Jets will be off until
Jan. 7 when they visit
Clinton at 8:30 p.m.
before they play in
Hensall Jan. 9 at 8 p.m
with the league all star
game scheduled for
Milverton Jan. 8.
The Jets next home
game is Jan. 22 when
Milverton visits.
Tips for travellers in the holiday season
Although travelling can be safe
and enjoyable activity, it can also
provide an opportunity for crime.
The OPP would like to remind
travellers to protect theemselves
and take the following precautions:
• Before leaving on a trip let a
friend or family member know your
destination and estimated time of
arrival;
• Look safe;
• Project an image of confidence
and sureness;
• Be aware of your surroundings;
• Never leave your luggage unat-
tended.
If you're travelling by car:
• Always lock your luggage in the
trunk;
• Always drive with all the car
doors locked;
• Never pick up hitch -hikers;
• Do not put personal and/or busi-
ness information on your luggage
tags;
• Dress inconspicuously, so you
won't draw attention to yourself;
• Stash your cash;
• Do not carry large amounts of
cash — use traveller's cheques or
major credit cards;
• Make sure you keep a list of the
numbers of your traveller's
cheques and credit cards in a safe
place;
• Leave expensive jewelry at
home in a safe place;
• Keep all valuables in a safe
deposit box at your hotel;
• Conceal cash in a tuck away
pouch;
• Keep receipts for all purchases;
• Ensure your vehicle is in good
running order and gassed up;
• Be prepared for a break -down.
Carry a blanket, matches, a candle,
food, booster cables and flares.
If you become stranded:
• Stay in your vehicle;
• Display a "Call Police" sign or
use a white cloth outside the win-
dow or tied to the antenna;
• Never open your hood as a dis-
tress signal or to anyone who
claims they want to fix it. Opening
your hood allows someone access
to your motor and could make it
inoperable;
• Roll down your window only one
inch to speak to anyone on the out-
side;
• Ask that the police or a service
station be sent to assist you.
Monitor danger:
• Trust your instincts when sight-
seeing. Stay with a group of fellow
tourists;
• Avoid meeting strangers in
unknown and isolated places;
• Learn to recognize the uniforms
of local law enforcement officers;
• Use an auto club, travel agency,
or other reliable sources of infor-
mation to find out as much as pos-
sible about the place you are going
to — ask about what you should do
and what you should avoid;
• Photocopy all important docu-
ments such as passport and airline
tickets.
Added tips:
• Keep all of your medication in
your carry -on luggage;
• During long layovers in termi-
nals, use coin operated lockers to
store your belongings;
• Avoid isolated areas of your hotel;
• Avoid wandering on the beach
alone at night;
• Don't take expensive items to
the beach;
• Remember to get travel insur-
ance;
• Use sunscreen;
• Drink bottled water.
