I would like a Bratz doll, Clikitz, jew- ellery box and a Barbie scoot- er. I have been helping Mom and Dad around the house. I have been good. I hope you have a safe trip on Christmas Eve. Bye Santa. Love, Alexis McCarthy Age: 6 years Parents Susanne and Greg Dear Santa, My name is Max and this is my first Christmas. My par- ents and family are teaching me about Christmas and Santa Claus. Soon we are going to get a real tree to decorate. For Christmas I would like to see all my fami- ly together and I am hoping for a new wagon/sleigh. Thank you. Love, Max VanDongen-Miles Age: 6 months Parents: Kristi VanDongen, Derek Miles Dear Santa, I know you are very busy, but I thought I would write and tell you some of the things I would like for Christmas. My Mommy is helping me to write this let- ter, because I am only two and a half, but she says I have been very good this year. I have only misbehaved a few times but I am two so what can everyone expect. For Christmas I would like Princess Dora, a new doll, a doll play set (the one with the stroller, playpen and highchair — so I can take care of my doll), and lots of new clothes because I have out- grown so many of my other clothes. I will leave some milk and cookies out for you and the reindeer. I wish it was Christmas tomorrow because I can't stop opening the presents that are already under the tree. Love, Ashley Keller Age: 2 1/2 years Santa, I have been a good girl in the last year. I would like a shovel, sled and balls for Xmas. xox Cassidy Campbell Age: 16 months Parents: Kim & Steve Campbell About the Times -Advocate y ex - ern Grade 6 UsborneCentral 2 I r /) o Cm canayccne Heive. Remember the last couple of years of the 1990s, when everyone was paranoid that computers, air- planes, microwave ovens, VCRs and electric razors were going to stop working at the stroke of mid- night on Jan. 1, 2000? To me, that pointless hyste- ria — which saw nervous nellies running around stocking up on canned soup and bottled water and making sure their computers were updated — seems like yesterday; in fact, we're now almost halfway through the first decade of the new millennium. Where did the time go? Canadians now find themselves in the middle of a winter with no NHL season in sight. It used to be the only thing that made winter tolerable for Canadians was the ritual of crowding around the TV Saturday night listening to Ron MacLean make bad puns and Don Cherry murder the English language with his foot in his mouth. We've had to do without "Hockey Night in Canada" this year, but we're still treated to MacLean every Saturday night, as he intro- duces CBC's disappointing "Movie Night in Canada," during which our public broadcaster shows really lame American movies like "Happy Gilmore," "Tin Cup" and "The Legend of Bagger Vance." Oh, you missed CBC's tribute to golf movies? When first announced, I thought CBC's movie night was a good idea. What a great chance, I thought, for the CBC to support the Canadian film industry by showing the best of our country's cine- matic offerings. And the odd American classic wouldn't hurt, either. No, instead we get Hollywood crap or movies everyone has seen dozens of times — "Jaws" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark." How exciting, CBC. It almost makes me want Don Cherry back. So what is a Canadian winter without the Leafs falsely raising the hopes of their min- ions? Well, it's cold and nasty, that's for sure (as I write this in my office, I'm wear- ing my winter coat and I am still cold. It's hard to type with gloves on). But frankly, nothing beats a Canadian Christmas. We all love to complain about the cold, the snow and the bad driving con- ditions (for the record, Exeter's Main Street was a skating rink all weekend), but Christmas just wouldn't be the same with- out snowdrifts, frostbite and dead car bat- teries. It's easy to be cynical about the rampant com- mercialism and corporate greed that surrounds Christmas every year, but I'm choosing to look at the positive — great food, time with family, and every year my wife and my parents spend lots of money on me. What could be better than that? Here's hoping Santa is good to all Times - Advocate readers. SCOTT NIXON AND ANOTHER THING Address & Office Hours Times -Advocate, 424 Main Street South, P.O.
