Vehicle left on side of Board chaplain takes posting in Gander
highway damaged
BLUEWATER — On Dec. 12 at 9 a.m. an OPP
officer stopped to investigate a vehicle left on
the side of the Highway 4 one kilometre south
of Kippen.
Police say the vehicle, a light blue four -door
Chev Lumina, was left on the east side of the
highway due to electrical problems late the
night before. Sometime between 2 a.m. and 7
a.m. someone stopped and deliberately drove
into the side of the car twice. The driver's side
of the vehicle was rammed twice leaving two
holes in the exterior body of the car. The dri-
ver's side window and the rear window were
smashed and a tire was destroyed. Damage is
excessive and an empty beer bottle was found
at the scene.
If you can help solve the crime call the local
OPP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-
8477(TIPS).

SOUTH HURON — On
Dec. 10 the OPP was
conducting a RIDE pro-
gram on Huron Street
in Exeter when an
approaching light-
coloured 2000 Neon
suddenly turned away.
Officers stopped the
vehicle a block away as
it pulled into a drive-
way on another street.
Police say five people
were in the vehicle and
the driver had alcohol
on her breath. She
failed a roadside test,
was arrested and taken
for breath tests, which
indicated she was just
under two times the
legal limit.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES -ADVOCATE
DUBLIN — The chaplain of the
Huron -Perth Catholic District
School Board, Father "Moe"
Charbonneau, has taken a posting
as pastor in a two-point "Parish in
Mission" in Gander, Nfld.
And, as has been the case during
his five years serving Huron and
Perth counties, he's approaching
the change with a wry sense of
humour.
"Yeah, I'm going to a province
where they don't have any Catholic
school boards," he said with a smile
during the board's annual inaugur-
al meeting, Dec. 6.
Charbonneau was referring to a
1997 referendum in Newfoundland
and Labrador, which abolished that
province's publicly -funded separate
school system.
Then, in an interview after the
meeting, he repeated the one-liner
he has been telling his acquain-
tances since he found out about his
Atlantic assignment last May:
"Unless it's still snowing in July. If
it's doing that, I might be back," the
Chatham -area native joked.
Charbonneau has served as pas-
tor for the two-point St. Patrick's
(Dublin)/St. Vincent de Paul
(Mitchell) charge for 5 1/2 years.
With the school board's administra-
tive offices in Dublin, that posting
also includes the title of board
chaplain.
The position with the board is
largely ceremonial, with the chap-
lain attending such events as
school openings.
But Charbonneau noted he has
also acted as liaison between the
board and the Catholic diocese, as
well as providing spiritual guidance
to the board.
For now, "Father Moe" has com-
mitted to two years in Gander. His
assignment is part of a five-year
fill-in plan for the regular pastor,
who has been chosen to teach for
the next five years.
Replacing Charbonneau, when he
leaves Dec. 28, will be Lucan native
Father Gerard Dewan, who has
served the past 17 years in Regina
but is now returning to his south-
western Ontario roots.
