Mt. Brydges Bulldogs drop Hawks 7-3
By Pat Bolen

EXETER — The Exeter
Hawks dropped their lone
game of the week
Saturday night with a 7-3
loss in Mt Brydges.
The Hawks spotted the
Bulldogs an early 2-0 lead
in the first period before
clawing their way back in
it with three second peri-
od goals.
But the Bulldogs
fired three in the
last minutes of
the third period
to pull away and
take the 7-3 win.
Exeter coach
Derek Macnair
said his team did-
n't show up for
the game.
"We weren't in
the game in the
first minute and we go
into the third period down
4-3 and we're still not in it
and we're playing at
about 55 or 60 per cent
capacity ... Once they get
their mindset that they
have to play for 60 min-
utes there isn't a team in
the league that can touch
them."
Despite the loss, Exeter
sits one point back of
Lucan with a 13-6-1-1
record for 28 points for
second in the division and
two back of Thamesford
for first in the conference.
Scott Davies got the
Hawks to within one goal
early in the second but the
Bulldogs regained their
two -goal margin just three
minutes later.
A pair of Exeter goals
just 30 seconds apart from
Dan Moir and Tony Regier
put the Hawks back in a
3-3 tie.
Scott
Davies
Mt. Brydges
again took the
lead before the
period was over
with a shorthand-
ed marker and
fired three unan-
swered in the
third.
The Hawks were
unable to score
with either of
their two chances
on the power
play, while the Bulldogs
were 2-9 with the man
advantage, along with a
shorthanded goal.
Exeter outshot Mt.
Brydges 37-36 while get-
ting assists in the loss was
Chad Deman with two and
singles from Daryl
Bourne, Tony Regier and
Paul Denomme.
Macnair said there was
only so much the coaches
could do. "You're not the
ones playing the game ... if
they give a 100 per cent
effort every night they'll
win 85 to 95 per cent of
their hockey games.
"You get six or seven
guys that give you every-
thing they've got every
night, and then you get
guys that just go through
the motions. And it's going
to stop."
The Hawks will try to
get back in the win col-
umn Friday night when
North Middlesex visits for
an 8:30 p.m. game before
Exeter travels to West
Lorne Saturday at 7:30
p.m.
The Hawks will be back
on the ice Monday night
for a return visit to Mt.
Brydges at 7:30 p.m.

Reid sees end of the curse
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
BOSTON — Exeter's Dave Reid wit-
nessed history recently when he was at
the first two games of the World Series.
Both games were won by the Boston
Red Sox who would sweep the series to
end the most famous curse in sports his-
tory.
A passionate baseball fan, Reid said
although he never really liked the Red
Sox, he had the chance to go to the
series with tickets obtained through a
friend of a friend who works at Gator
Aide.
He described the experience of the first
two games of the series in Boston as the
best baseball ever with Red Sox fans
"very educated ... they understand the
game."
After having also been at the 2003
World Series in Florida, Reid said there
was a difference walking around the city
the afternoon before the game. He said
the entire city was devoted to the team
unlike in Florida.
"In Florida, you wouldn't find a fan
outside the park."
The Red Sox had been in four World
Series since 1918: in 1946, 1967, 1975
and 1986 and lost every series in game
seven, leading to what Reid called a
"feeling of doom among Boston fans."
With only 37,000 seats in Fenway
Park, tickets for the series were at a pre-
mium, with the seat Reid was sitting in,
in the second deck just past third base,
going for $1,500 and scalpers getting
$14,000 for premium seats.
St. Louis was never able to get on track
in game one, which the Red Sox won in
an 11-9 slugfest, a game Reid described
as poorly played by both teams.
Reid said the game two performance
of pitcher Curt Schilling, throwing with a
patched together tendon in his right
ankle to lead Boston to a 6-2 win and a
2-0 lead in the series, will go down as
one of the best ever post season perfor-
mances, but overall it wasn't a series of
great plays.
"Manny Ramirez won the MVP almost
by default. St. Louis never hit although
they had as good a lineup."
One of the best things about the series
according to Reid was how the fans
acted.
"They were passionate without being
stupid."
With Boston finally having ending their
streak of futility, he added there is
almost a sense of sadness for Red Sox
fans and baseball fans in general.
"A great story is done. There was
almost a special status Sox fans had they
don't have now. It was a badge of hon-
our."
