Page 20 18 TIMES ADVOCATE port Olf Wednesday, December 1, 2004 Hawks win three of three games By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — The Exeter Hawks were perfect last week, winning all three games they played, start- ing with a 6-5 win in West Lorne Nov. 27, before rolling over Belmont 6-2 Friday night in Exeter. The Hawks completed their week by pulling out a 4-3 win in overtime Sunday night in Parkhill. The wins give the Hawks a 13-5- 1-1 record for 28 points, two up on Lucan, two back of Thamesford for the conference lead and three behind league leading Delhi. The Hawks took a quick lead against the Lakers with a goal by Chad Deman, just minutes into the first period. The Lakers replied before the midway point of the period but Joe Nesbitt's power play marker put Exeter ahead once again before the period was over. Matt Vlemmix gave the Hawks a two -goal lead just 50 seconds into the second period but the lead didn't hold up. West Lorne fired a pair of goals before the period was over for a 3-3 lead. Nathan Regier's power play marker gave the Hawks another lead early in the third but again West Lorne replied with two more taking a 5-4. But the Hawks weren't done as an unassisted effort by Scott Davies put them back in a 5-4 tie. It looked to be going to overtime, but with two seconds left Jamie Wolfe's goal sent the Hawks home with the win. Picking up assists in the effort were Daryl Bourne with two and singles from Nesbitt, Jeff Smale, Regier, Wolfe and Davies. The Hawks never trailed against Belmont Friday night with Smale opening the scoring four minutes in for the lone goal of the period. Belmont managed to tie it early in the second but the Hawks went ahead to stay just three minutes later taking advantage of a two- man advantage. It took only a few seconds before Wolfe's low shot from the point beat Greg White for a 2-1 lead. Jason Stuckless took over after that with the first of three straight goals, cutting across the slot and beating Belmont goalie Greg White unassisted. After putting the Hawks up by three before the period was over with his second, Stuckless com- pleted his hat trick in the third, taking a pass in the slot and one timing a shot past White. A late goal by the Bombers was- n't enough with a final 6-2. Getting assists in the win were Josh Liddle and Justin Young each with two and singles from Bourne, Wolfe and Darcy McCutcheon. Cam Becker got the win in net. Sunday night the Hawks needed a power play goal late in the third from Tony Regier to send it over- time, before Young pulled out the win. The Hawks finished the first with a 2-1 lead on goals from Justin LaPorte and Vlemmix, wrapped around a Parkhill goal. A pair of goals in the second by the home team put the Hawks down by one before they rebound- ed in the third. McCutcheon, Davies, Wolfe, Bourne, Stuckless and Dan Moir had assists in the win while Justin Hayter picked up his second win of the week. Exeter coach Derek MacNair was pleased with the efforts of the team during the week, but said they need to learn to play a full game. "If we can learn to play a full 60 minutes, we won't have to worry about going into overtime. "We've got guys that are big enough and strong enough they should be beating these guys to the outside. It`s just a matter of getting these guys in the right mindset to play 60 minutes." The Hawks have only a single game this week with a visit to Mt. Brydges Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 10, which was to have been Mt. Carmel School night at the Rec Centre will be the Hawk's annual Teddy Bear Toss. SHDHS Panther senior girls basketball STRATFORD — The senior girls basketball team went to a WOSSAA qualifier recently in Stratford against Stratford Central. A determined Panther team came out with an impressive two points off the opening tip and played tenacious defence in the opening minutes, but the team was frustrated by the Rams intense defence and their own lack of good scoring chances. In the end, the hot shooting of the Rams spoiled the Panthers hopes of a WOSSAA birth, Their opponents drained seven shots from the three-point stripe to defeat South Huron 39-19. Janine Malcolm scored eight points and Kylen VanOsch pulled down 15 rebounds in the loss. Coaches Mandy Migchels and Phil Conley thank all eight girls for their dedication and sportsmanship and a great season of basketball at South Huron. It was highlighted by their win over Parkhill at the St. Anne tournament and their impressive playoff game against Stratford Northwestern losing 51-48 in a near miracle comeback. The entire coaching staff and team give special thanks to their only returning senior Grade 12 stu- dent, Julie Prout, who will graduate this year and move on from South Huron.
