Watch for suicide's warning signs
By Scott Nixon

EXETER —
Communication with your
child is vital.
That was one of the
messages learned last
week at South Huron
District High School in a
discussion on `Suicide and
Self -Harm Awareness,'
part of a series of commu-
nity forums presented by
the School Council this
year.
Rue Brenner, a school
trauma and loss specialist
for the Avon Maitland
District School Board and
also part of the board's
tragic events response
team, spoke at the meet-
ing, describing suicide as
"an overwhelming event"
that people find difficult to
discuss.
Brenner said suicide has
an "enormous effect" on
relatives and friends of
someone who commits
suicide.
"It's an act of escape ...
death happens to be the
long-term consequence."
Brenner said she visits
53 schools in the board
and suicide is not an
uncommon topic starting
at age six and continuing
into high school. SHDHS
principal Jeff Reaburn
said suicide is becoming
more of an issue at ele-
mentary schools than it
used to.
Brenner said self -harm
at elementary schools is
"shocking," adding young-
sters are now forced to
cope with information that
should not be put into
their minds. She later
added that in an economy
where often both parents
are working, added stress-
es are being put on fami-
lies.
There are many clues a
youth may be contemplat-
ing suicide. Some signs
Brenner noted include:
• a lack of sleep; • a loss
of appetite; • a shift in per-
sonality; • a loss of interest
in things; • withdrawal
from friends; • drug use.
Brenner said sometimes
the signs can't be detect-
ed.
"Some kids will never
verbalize the depth of
their despair."
Females attempt suicide
three times as much as
males, although males are

more likely to complete

Brenner said people
choose death because the
pain of coping with life is
unbearable.
"Suicide robs a family of
a loved one, but it also
robs the loved one of a
future," Brenner said.
Brenner said divorce can
be a tough time for youths;
they can feel responsible
for their parents' mar-
riage breaking up and
internalize the guilt and
anger they feel. She said it
is exhausting physically,
spiritually and mentally to
be depressed.
Brenner said anyone
expressing suicidal signs
needs immediate atten-
tion.
"If someone has a plan,
they need intervention."
Brenner encouraged
parents to watch for the
signs of depression or sui-
cidal intentions and take

them seriously. She said
parents should make

"Communication is vital.
Let's make every effort we
possibly can," Brenner
said.

PLAN H5-3-626 Roomy Rancher Custom craftsmanship and a functional floor plan make this three-bedroom rancher seem larger than its 1,600 square
feet. Picturesque windows, stone accents and a cross -rail porch give character to the exterior. Added street appeal is created by balancing the peak over
the double garage with a similar roofline over the living room window and a decorative peak in between. The porch area is set back, allowing room for a
flower -bed between the house and the walkway from the garage. Inside, the front foyer leads into a formal living room and dining room. Decorative
pillars accent the entrance to this combined space, which is ideal for formal entertaining. The dining room has an optional buffet flanked by windows.
The living room has a gas fireplace and a sloped ceiling over the window. A pocket door from the dining room leads to the kitchen where an angled work
island/eating bar houses a double sink and the dishwasher. The raised side of the bar makes a great spot to enjoy a cup of coffee. The breakfast nook
has plenty of room for a dining table and chairs. Double doors off the nook open to a spacious back yard patio. The adjoining family room has a comer
fireplace and windows overlooking the patio. The master bedroom suite is privately placed at the back of the house. It includes a three-piece ensuite
bathroom and a walk-in closet. The second and third bedrooms share the main three-piece bathroom. Cupboards for linen storage and for the furnace
and hot water tank are found in the main hallway, easily accessed from the laundry room. The double garage has a door to the side yard. It also has a
door leading directly into the house, through the laundry. This single -level house measures 56 feet, 8 inches wide by 46, 4 inches deep and has 1,620
square feet of living space. Plans for design H5-3-626 are available for $494 (set of 5), $571 (set of 8) and $620 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add
7.5% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $20.00 for Priority charges within B.C. or $40.00 outside of B.C. Please add 7% G.S.T. or 15% H.S.T. (where applicable)
to both the plan price and Priority charges. The 36th Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 300 plans is available for $13.50 (includes
taxes, postage and handling). Make all cheques and money orders payable to "Home Plan of the Week" and mail to: HOME PLAN OF THE WEEK c/o Exeter
